Life story

Seabury Ford was born in 1801 in Cheshire, Connecticut, and graduated from Yale in 1825. He read law under Judge Peter Hitchcock in Burton and began practice in 1827. In 1828 he married Harriet E. Cook of Burton.

He represented Geauga County in the Ohio House from 1835 to 1841, serving one term as speaker, then sat in the state senate until 1848.

He won the 1848 governor's race by 311 votes. His 1849-50 term faced arguments over slavery and the Mexican War and a cholera epidemic. He was Ohio's last Whig governor and served only one term.

Not long after leaving office he suffered a stroke. He died in Burton in 1855 and is buried at Welton Cemetery.
