How Parkman Township, Geauga County began
Parkman Township is named for Robert Breck Parkman, a Massachusetts-born lawyer who first scouted the land on horseback in 1797 for his uncle, Boston merchant Samuel Parkman, who had purchased the township, and who returned in June 1804 to settle it permanently as his uncle's land agent. Robert Parkman built the township's first cabin, sawmill, and post office, served as its postmaster for 24 years and as Geauga County's prosecutor, and raised the first two children born in the township before his death in 1832. Parkman remains a small rural township, with 4,446 residents in 2020.
Settled June 17, 1804 (Robert Breck Parkman arrives at Grand River with his wife and infant son, then proceeds to Parkman Township as his uncle Samuel Parkman's land agent), by Robert Breck Parkman, agent for his uncle and the township's owner, Samuel Parkman of Boston.
Where the name comes from
Named for the Parkman family: Samuel Parkman of Boston purchased the township, and his nephew Robert Breck Parkman scouted it in 1797 and settled it as Samuel's land agent in 1804.

- — In June, Parkman leaves Cayuga, New York with his wife and infant son, reaches Grand River (Painesville) on June 17, then goes on alone to the township, where he and his 11-year-old brother-in-law Alfred Phelps build a first cabin 'without floor, doors, or glazed windows.'
- — Parkman is appointed the township's postmaster, an office he holds until 1829; his daughter Adaline, born this year, is recorded as the first white child born in the township.
- — The court appoints Robert B. Parkman prosecutor for Geauga County; he is among the county's first practicing attorneys, alongside Samuel W. Phelps and Peter Hitchcock of Burton.
- — Lucy Phelps Parkman, Robert's first wife and, per the county history, 'the first white woman ever in the town,' dies of consumption.
- — Robert Breck Parkman dies in March at Orwell, Ashtabula County, while away on business.

Stories
A stump for a table
Robert Breck Parkman had already crossed into Ohio once before, in 1797, riding out from his father's farm in Oneida County, New York, partly to recover his health and partly to look over land his uncle Samuel Parkman had bought sight unseen from Boston. He came back for good in June 1804, leaving his wife Lucy and their infant son with a judge in Grand River (present Painesville) while he pushed on to the township with his eleven-year-old brother-in-law, Alfred Phelps. Their first order of business was getting the state road routed through the township; their second was shelter. The cabin they raised had no floor, no doors, and no glazed windows -- a large stump served as the table -- but within five weeks Parkman had his family installed in it, and by that November he had a proper three-room log house standing on what became the west side of the township's public square. Parkman spent the rest of his life managing his uncle's land, serving as postmaster for 24 years and as county prosecutor, until he died in 1832 on a business trip to Ashtabula County, leaving behind the two children the county history remembers as the first white boy and girl born in Parkman.
