How Middlefield Township, Geauga County began

Middlefield Township was the first-settled part of the eastern half of what became Geauga County: Isaac and James Thompson arrived in 1799, and by the 1879 county history's account the township's early village was first called Batavia before being renamed Middlefield for its position midway between Painesville and Warren. Joseph Johnson settled just north of the village in 1800, founding what became known as Johnson Corners. Today the township surrounds the incorporated village of Middlefield and is part of Geauga County's large Amish settlement; it had 4,525 residents in 2020.

Settled 1799 (Isaac and James Thompson, per the 1879 county history), by Isaac and James Thompson, first settlers.

Where the name comes from

The township's central settlement was originally called Batavia; it was renamed Middlefield because the site lay midway between Painesville and Warren.

Before the town

The 1879 county history records that small bands of Wyandot, Lenape (Delaware), and Shawnee, along with other groups, used the Cuyahoga River valley on Middlefield's borders as hunting and trapping ground, and that many were still present and well known to early settlers. An Indian trail crossed the township eastward from a camp in Burton, passing the residence of settler Joseph Johnson, and was used by hunting parties leading their ponies with pack loads; the source recalls that word of the War of 1812's outbreak reached these groups first, and that they vanished from the area in a single night, leaving deserted camps behind. The source also repeats, as legend rather than established fact, an account that a small band which returned after the war to old hunting grounds at "the Rapids" (on the Cuyahoga, near the Hiram, Portage County line) was ambushed and killed by returning soldiers, with only one survivor; it does not name the band's nation.

Nations recorded here: Wyandot, Lenape (Delaware), Shawnee.

Timeline

  1. — Two men named Romoyn and Hillman, probably hunters or traders gathering furs from the Indians, build a rude cabin in the Middlefield woods and soon leave, perhaps for Canada.
  2. — Colonel Thomas Sheldon of Enfield, Connecticut lays out the Old Girdled Road from near the mouth of Grand River to Warren and the Ohio; Isaac Thompson later builds a tavern on it a few rods southeast of the old burying ground.
  3. — Isaac and James Thompson become the first settlers of what becomes Middlefield Township, after Isaac had already made and abandoned homesteads near Rochester, New York, and in present West Virginia.
  4. — Joseph Johnson settles just north of the main village, founding the locality later known as Johnson Corners (Wikipedia gives 1800; the 1879 county history dates his arrival 1801 and says he bought the land where Romoyn and Hillman had built their cabin).
  5. — Lydia Thompson, daughter of Isaac, is born, the first girl-baby of the township; Robert Wallace, who with John Wallace kept an early tavern, marries a daughter of Samuel Meno in the first wedding in Middlefield.
  6. — Uncle Silas Young, a Quaker, builds Middlefield's first saw-mill on Swine Creek, becoming the township's first manufacturer of sawn lumber.
  7. — James Glenn settles in the east part, and Silas Young, a Quaker, settles on Swine Creek; Jesse B. Bishop of Connecticut settles on the old State road in 1806.
  8. — Isaac Thompson is elected Middlefield's first justice of the peace.
  9. — When the news of the approaching War of 1812 reaches the Indians in the Cuyahoga valley, the 1879 history says they disappear from their camps in a single night, leaving deserted wigwams and extinguished fires; the last file of hunters on the trail through Middlefield, nearly a mile long and painted for war, had unsettled the scattered settlers.
  10. — Moses Hutchins of Connecticut, who moved to Burton in 1812, crosses the Cuyahoga to Middlefield; Moses Morse comes from Massachusetts in 1815 and marries Lydia Thompson two years later, and William Crittenden of New Haven arrives in 1819.
  11. — The county commissioners unite Huntsburg and Middlefield into a single civil township named Batavia.
  12. — U.S. Census records 4,525 residents in Middlefield Township, which surrounds the incorporated village of Middlefield and lies within Geauga County's large Amish settlement.

Stories

Uncle Silas Young's wartime flour contract

Silas Young, a Quaker known locally as "Uncle Silas," settled on Swine Creek in Middlefield's southern part and built the township's first saw-mill in 1805 or 1806. Departing from his faith's testimony against strong drink, he also set up a whiskey still in 1807 and kept a tavern. During the War of 1812 he became a flour contractor for General Harrison's army, buying wheat at two dollars a bushel in Columbiana County, having it milled, and hauling it by wagon to the Lake Erie port of Fairport. When peace came suddenly, Young was left holding many thousand barrels of flour at prices that collapsed overnight, and he lost heavily on the deal, though his descendants remained respected residents of the county.

The war paint on the Cuyahoga trail

Middlefield was never the site of an Indian town, the 1879 county history says, but small bands of Wyandot, Delaware, Shawnee and others hunted and trapped along the Cuyahoga. They had a little camp in Burton on ground that became the old burying-ground south of the village, and from it an Indian trail ran east across Middlefield past Joseph Johnson's house into Trumbull County, along which parties with their ponies led by the women were often seen going to and from their hunts. The last of these trains was different: strung out in thin file nearly a mile long, every hunter appeared in the fierce aspect of a warrior in fiery red paint, and the sight caused much uneasiness in the scattered settlements. It was said that the news of the approaching War of 1812 reached the Indians first, and in a single night they disappeared from their haunts by spring and stream, leaving the settlers deserted wigwams, empty hunting grounds and extinguished camp-fires. The history adds a legend, which it does not vouch for, that after the war a small band that returned to camp at The Rapids in Hiram was set upon and destroyed by returned soldiers, with one escaping.
