How Champaign County began
Champaign County was formed by the Ohio General Assembly on March 1, 1805, from parts of Greene and Franklin counties, the 18th of Ohio's eventual 88 counties, and named from the French word for open, level country -- the same root that Champaign County and the city of Champaign, Illinois later borrowed from it. Its original territory reached much farther than today's county, taking in ground that became Clark County and Logan County when both were separated from it on March 1, 1818; the county seat, Urbana, was laid out that same founding year, 1805, by Colonel William Ward and Joseph C. Vance on Ward's own donated tract. The Mad River valley the county sits in had been, within living memory of its first settlers, part of the Shawnee homeland of west-central Ohio -- the frontiersman Simon Kenton, held captive there in 1778-79, later said his time among the Shawnee "acquainted him with the Mad River country," and he returned in 1799 to help found the settlement that became Urbana, where he is buried today. The Treaty of Greenville of 1795 opened the whole county to settlement, and seventeen years later, in June 1812, Urbana itself hosted one of the last formal councils between an Ohio governor and the Shawnee, Wyandot, Seneca and Mingo nations before General William Hull's army marched north from the town into the War of 1812. The county today is limestone-cavern and farm country, still centered on Urbana's courthouse square.
Urbana was platted in 1805 as Champaign County's seat, laid out on land Colonel William Ward set aside for the purpose under an agreement with Joseph C. Vance dated October 11, 1805; the county's own government history page states the county's original, larger 1805 territory was briefly seated at Springfield before Urbana's founding, and the 1881 county history confirms that the first court met at a temporary seat of justice in George Fithian's house we read. Urbana's name is of uncertain origin, most likely from the Latin urbs (city), and a 1939 review is said to have found it the first of a dozen American towns to bear the name. The present Champaign County Courthouse, the county's fifth, is a 1956-57 International-style building designed by architect Phillip T. Partridge and dedicated June 8, 1957 with Governor C. William O'Neill in attendance, replacing an earlier courthouse destroyed by fire on January 20, 1948; it stands within, though is not itself individually listed as a contributing property to, the Urbana Monument Square Historic District.

Champaign County was named from the French word for open, level country, describing the character of much of its Mad River valley land; the same French-derived name and, per Wikipedia's Champaign, Illinois article, the same naming chain was later borrowed for Champaign County, Illinois and its county seat, the city of Champaign, when that Illinois town was renamed from West Urbana in 1860 -- so the naming runs from the French term to Ohio's Champaign County first, and only later to the Illinois county and city, not the reverse.
