How Mutual began

Mutual, originally called Texas, lies in the center of Union Township on Buck Creek. About 1840 William Lafferty sold the first lots and, as the story went, let neighbors believe he was leaving for Texas but moved into a cabin next to the settlement, so the place was called 'Lafferty's Texas.' David Conklin built the first house and Stephen Runyan the first tavern about 1842; the post office was established in 1843 or 1844 and the village was laid out in July 1846, though no plat was recorded until July 1869. It was incorporated on May 4, 1869, with about 200 people, and is remembered for its blacksmiths. The Carl Potter Mound, a burial mound believed to be Adena work, stands elsewhere in Union Township.

Settled c. 1840, platted laid out July 1846; plat recorded July 1869, incorporated May 4, 1869, by William Lafferty sold the first lots.

Where the name comes from

Beers's 1881 county history says the village of Mutual was formerly called Texas: William Lafferty sold the first lots about 1840 and gave the neighbors to understand that he was going to Texas, but moved into a little cabin next to the settlement, and the people ridiculously called it 'Lafferty's Texas.' The history does not say when or why the name Mutual replaced Texas.

Before the town

No Native American town, mound, or documented site is recorded for Mutual itself. Union Township, Champaign County — the township that contains Mutual — does hold one confirmed prehistoric site: the Carl Potter Mound, a Native American burial mound east of State Route 56 near Mechanicsburg, believed to be the work of the Adena culture (roughly 800 BC to AD 100), though a grooved stone axe found during 1930s excavation leaves open the possibility of an earlier Late Archaic origin. The mound covers about an acre on a ridge in a pasture and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. It sits several miles from Mutual village itself, within the same township, and is not documented as connected to the village directly. In the historic period, Union Township lay within Shawnee, Mingo, and Wyandot hunting and travelling territory before the Treaty of Greenville (1795).

Nations recorded here: Adena culture, Shawnee, Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga), Wyandot.

Timeline

  1. — Champaign County was organized from parts of Greene and Franklin counties.
  2. — The settlers of Union Township, alarmed by a report that Indians were taking up arms, gather for six weeks in a block-house on the site of Squire McLain's residence; two children are born during the stay, and the Indians move farther north and leave them unmolested.
  3. — William Lafferty sells the first lots on the site; David Conklin builds the first house, on the site of Smith's blacksmith shop, and John Sargent, the first blacksmith, the second, about the same time.
  4. — Stephen Runyan builds the first tavern about 1842 or 1843; the first wagon shop is Daniel Conklin's, and Michael Huston is the first to venture in merchandising.
  5. — A post office is established in 1843 or 1844 with Francis A. Morrison as postmaster, followed by Isaac W. Spencer, S. B. Bailey and others, and John Lafferty from July 17, 1871; the first mail route is on horseback from Urbana to West Jefferson once a week.
  6. — The village of Texas is laid out in July, but no original plat is recorded until July 1869.
  7. — On May 4, on the petition of W. H. McFarland and thirty others, Mutual is incorporated as a village with about 200 inhabitants; F. H. Snyder is elected the first mayor in 1870.
  8. — A fine school building, the largest in the township, is built in Mutual at a cost of $3,100, and in 1879 a two-story brick Township Hall is built for $2,200.
  9. — Boys digging into the Carl Potter Mound in southeastern Union Township find bones and a grooved stone axe; such axes occur at both Adena and earlier Late Archaic sites.
  10. — The Carl Potter Mound was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 13.

Stories

An acre of earth older than the township

Long before Union Township was surveyed and Mutual laid out in the 1840s, someone built an earthen mound on a small ridge in what is now southeastern Union Township, a few miles from the village. The mound covers about an acre and is believed to be Adena work, because its ridge-top setting matches other Adena sites; the Adena built burial mounds across central and southern Ohio from roughly 800 BC to AD 100. Past cultivation lowered the mound, though it is not plowed now. In the 1930s boys digging into it found bones and a grooved stone axe, a tool type found at both Adena and earlier Late Archaic sites, so the axe alone does not settle who built it. It is named for its owner, Carl Potter, and was earlier called Hodge Mound for a former owner. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 13, 1974.

Lafferty's Texas

William Lafferty sold the first lots on the site of Mutual about 1840. According to Beers's 1881 history, he tired of the 'Buck Creek' region and gave the neighbors to understand that he was going to Texas, then very much in the news. It soon turned out that he had only moved into a little cabin next to the settlement, and the people, with some ridicule, called the place 'Lafferty's Texas.' The name Texas stuck to the village: David Conklin built the first house, Stephen Runyan the first tavern about 1842, and a post office followed in 1843 or 1844. The village was laid out in July 1846 but no plat was recorded until July 1869, the year it incorporated with about 200 people. Beers adds that, above all things, Mutual had always been famous for its abundance of blacksmiths, whose hammers on the heavy anvil broke the quiet of the peaceful village.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
