How North Lewisburg began
North Lewisburg lies on Spain's Creek in the northern part of Rush Township, near where Champaign, Logan and Union counties meet. Gray Gary laid it out on September 6, 1826, on high ground by a big spring, with just two streets, Maple and Sycamore, and sold the lots at auction; many early residents were Quakers from the East, and the first village council kept its minutes in Quaker style. It was incorporated in 1844 and got its own post office, North Lewisburg, in 1845, while the corporation itself dropped the 'North' from its records for a time. A railroad through the village from 1853 helped it grow to 936 people by 1880, and it marked its bicentennial in 2026.
Settled 1805 (Hezekiah Spain, near the site), platted September 6, 1826, incorporated 1844, by Gray Gary.
Where the name comes from
Neither the 1881 nor the 1917 county history explains why Gary chose the name Lewisburg. The 1917 history records that the corporation was known as North Lewisburg in its first council minutes, that on July 12, 1846, the council voted to strike 'North' from its records and call itself Lewisburg, and that the post office kept the name North Lewisburg throughout. A local tradition that the village was named for Gen. Andrew Lewis of Virginia was not confirmed in any source read.
Before the town
No Native village, mound or treaty site is recorded within North Lewisburg itself. The 1881 county history says Native families often camped on Spain's Creek near Hezekiah Spain's farm, just west of the village site, in the early 1800s (see the Wayne and Rush township records). The NRHP-listed house called The Fort, northeast of the village, is in Union County, not in North Lewisburg; it shares only the ZIP code 43060.

Timeline
- — Hezekiah Spain came from Virginia and settled near the future site of North Lewisburg; from about 1808 Methodist preaching was held at his house every four weeks.
- — A small log church, later known as Spain's Church, was built a mile west of the village site; a hewed-log church replaced it about 1832.
- — Gray Gary platted Lewisburg on September 6 near a big spring on Spain's Creek, with Maple and Sycamore streets; the first lot sold at auction for eighteen dollars.
- — The Friends (Quakers) built the village's first church.
- — The village was incorporated by act of the legislature, with Russell B. Spain as its first mayor.
- — The North Lewisburg post office opened with Royal Jennings as postmaster; mail had come from Coberly's on Darby Creek and from Woodstock.
- — On July 12 the council struck 'North' from the corporation's records, though the post office kept the name.
- — The Methodist Episcopal church building was dedicated on December 22, and the congregation of Spain's Church moved into it.
- — The Franklin and Warren railroad (later the New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio) was built through the village.

- — The Bank of North Lewisburg was organized in June.
- — The union schoolhouse was built on East Maple Street for twelve thousand dollars, house and grounds.
- — An African Methodist Episcopal church was built at Gregory and East Townsend streets.
- — An Italianate house known as 'The Fort' was built northeast of the village - across the county line in Union County, Ohio, not in Champaign County.
- — The village had 936 people inside the corporation, up from 390 in 1860 and 735 in 1870.
- — Howe's Historical Collections listed Methodist, AME, Methodist Protestant, Catholic and Friends churches, a bank and the Tri-County Free Press newspaper.
- — The Fort was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 8, listed under Union County, not Champaign County.
Stories
A landmark that isn't quite the village's own
The most striking historic building near North Lewisburg is a square Italianate house built in 1877, five bays to a side, with a hip roof of multicolored slate and an ornamental cornice visible for miles across the flat country around it - locals and the National Register simply call it 'The Fort.' Its listing carries the village's name because it sits on N. Lewisburg Road just northeast of town, but the property itself, and the three acres around it, lie across the line in Union County, not in Champaign County or North Lewisburg's own Rush Township. It is a reminder that a place name and a county line do not always agree on a map.
A Quaker village on the Underground Railroad
Edward C. Young came to North Lewisburg around 1850, when it was a hamlet of perhaps three hundred people, and for several years taught school in the Friends meeting house. In recollections printed in the 1917 county history, he wrote that the slavery question was then shaking the country, that both old parties were at war with the abolitionists, and that the village sat on the line of the Underground Railroad, where Quaker homes were looked on with suspicion as depots. Many people escaping slavery were sheltered and helped on from the village; at one time sixteen men, women and children stayed briefly at his own house. Young acted as conductor only once, taking a group safely to the next station at Marysville, and a few weeks later heard that they had reached Canada.
Gary's mill and the first cabins
Before he built the first frame house in Lewisburg, Gray Gary lived in a cabin beside his little grist mill on the bank of the millpond. The 1881 county history lists the cabins that made up the early village, scattered along Maple and Sycamore streets, one of them built in 1849 near the Methodist church and still lived in by Mrs. Murphy in 1880. Gary's frame house also still stood, occupied by the Rev. Samuel Hutchinson. The first school met in a log house; the next was a frame building on a lot Gary gave near the creek, and later schools stood on West Elm Street, then in the woods, and on South Sycamore Street.

Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
