How Urbana began
Urbana was laid out in 1805 by Col. William Ward, a Virginia land speculator who had come into the Mad River valley with the frontiersman Simon Kenton in 1799, and it became the seat of the new Champaign County the same year. Ward divided his 160-acre tract into lots, kept half for himself and gave half to the county, and named the town for the Latin idea of the urbane or civic - the first American town of that name. It grew as a market and mill town, briefly served as a staging point for the Northwestern Army in the War of 1812, and later became the birthplace of sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward, Col. Ward's grandson. Today it remains the Champaign County seat and largest community in the county.
Settled 1799 (Kenton and Ward's Mad River valley settlement, southeast of the future townsite), platted 1805, incorporated 1805 (county seat); later chartered as a city, by Col. William Ward, with Joseph C. Vance.
Where the name comes from
Ward and Vance named the new county seat Urbana in October 1805. The exact source of the name is not settled: candidate explanations include the Latin 'urbs' (city) and the Roman idea of 'urbanity' or refinement, and a 1939 review found Urbana, Ohio was the first of twelve American cities to carry the name Urbana.
Before the town
No village, mound, or treaty site has been documented inside the platted city itself. Urbana sits in the Mad River valley that was Shawnee country before 1795: Simon Kenton, who helped select the site with Ward, had first seen the valley as a captive of the Shawnee in 1778-79 and returned to settle it after the Treaty of Greenville opened the region. Shawnee towns such as Mackachack and Piqua stood nearby, in what are now Logan and Clark counties, then inside Champaign County's larger original bounds; no site-specific village, mound, or earthwork is recorded within the city of Urbana.

Timeline
- — Simon Kenton led families from Mason County, Kentucky into the Mad River valley between the future sites of Urbana and Springfield, and William Ward settled with them.
- — Champaign County was formed on March 1; Ward and Vance agreed on October 11 to plat Ward's 160 acres as the new county seat, naming it Urbana.
- — Urbana briefly served as headquarters for the Northwestern Army during the War of 1812.

Stories
A frontiersman and a gentleman divide a town
William Ward and Simon Kenton met in 1774 at the Battle of Point Pleasant and stayed connected for more than thirty years, an odd pairing of the college-educated Virginia land agent and the illiterate Kentucky scout. Ward held a military land warrant that overlapped ground Kenton had already claimed, and the two men fought over titles for decades - in 1818 Kenton even sued Ward over Champaign County land, and lost when the court found no fraud. It was Ward, not Kenton, who had the capital and the surveying sense to turn 160 acres of his Mad River valley claim into a platted town: in October 1805 he and Joseph Vance divided the tract into 212 lots and 22 out-lots, split them with the new county, and Ward named the result Urbana. He gave land for the public square and a cemetery, and lived at his farm Nutwood Place, just north of town, until he died there on Christmas Eve, 1822.
The boy who modeled mud by the creek
John Quincy Adams Ward was born in Urbana in 1830, grandson of the town's founder, and grew up on the family's 600-acre homestead. As a child he shaped figures and animals out of mud along a creek on the property, and a neighboring potter, Miles Chatfield, let him use his studio and taught him the craft. Ward went on to become one of the leading American sculptors of the nineteenth century, working in New York; after his death in 1910 a bronze copy of his own 'The Indian Hunter' was placed at his grave in Urbana, and his boyhood home is separately listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
A congregation before it had a building
Among Urbana's first Black residents were a handful of people who had belonged to African Methodist Episcopal congregations back east. In 1824 or 1825 an AME missionary, Moses Freeman, passed through Urbana, found these former members, and organized eight of them as a charter congregation. For years afterward the church had no home of its own and worshipped in members' houses. Construction of a permanent building finally began in 1866, and the Greek Revival brick church still standing today was not finished until after Rev. Benjamin Arnett's arrival as pastor in 1876 - fifty years after the congregation itself was founded. It was listed on the National Register in 1997.
