How Christiansburg began
Christiansburg was platted in 1817 in Jackson Township, Champaign County, and named for Christiansburg, Virginia, the hometown of an early settler. A post office opened in 1833 and the village was incorporated in 1835; it remains PO Box-only, with no street mail delivery, to this day. Its population peaked at 788 in 1960 and has since declined to 505 at the 2020 census. The village's best-known native son, Marion A. Ross, was born there in 1832 and was executed as a Union spy during the Civil War's Andrews Raid, later receiving the Medal of Honor.

Before the town
No Native American town, mound, or documented site has been found specific to Christiansburg or Jackson Township. As elsewhere in Champaign County, the area lay within Shawnee, Mingo, and Wyandot hunting and travelling territory before the Treaty of Greenville (1795); a firsthand settler account from nearby Rush Township describes Mingo, Shawnee, and Piankeshaw people as neighbors at the time of white settlement. Nothing more specific to Christiansburg itself was found.
Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga), Wyandot.

Stories
The raider from Christiansburg
Marion A. Ross was born October 9, 1832, in Christiansburg, one of seven children of Levi and Mary Ross. He enlisted as a private in the 2nd Ohio Infantry in April 1861, reenlisted that August, and caught the eye of General Ormsby Mitchel, who promoted him to sergeant major that December and assigned him to secret service work under Captain James J. Andrews. In April 1862, Ross was one of the raiders who slipped into Georgia disguised as Confederate sympathizers, seized a locomotive called the General near Big Shanty, and tried to run it north wrecking track and bridges behind them to cut off Chattanooga from Atlanta — the episode later known as the Great Locomotive Chase. The raid failed; Confederate pursuers caught the raiders on foot after the stolen train ran out of fuel. Ross was captured, tried as a spy, and hanged in Atlanta on June 18, 1862. He is buried in Chattanooga National Cemetery, and in September 1863 he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, one of the first men so honored for the raid.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
