How Auglaize County began

Auglaize County was formed by the Ohio General Assembly on February 14, 1848, carved from parts of Allen, Mercer, Darke, Hardin, Logan, Shelby and Van Wert counties -- one of the last counties organized in the state -- and named for the Auglaize River, itself an English rendering of the French "riviere a la Grande Glaize" ("river of great clay/mud"), with a Shawnee name for the same stream, Kathinakithiipi, also recorded. Its seat, Wapakoneta, began as a Shawnee town and became, under the 1817 Treaty of the Maumee Rapids (Fort Meigs) and the 1818 Treaty of St. Mary's, the center of a ten-mile-square Shawnee reservation led by the senior civil chief Black Hoof (Catahecassa), who had settled his people there after the 1795 Treaty of Greenville and who lived at Wapakoneta until his death in 1831, months before the last Ohio Shawnee were forced onto a removal road to Kansas in 1832. The county's other defining thread is military: Fort Amanda, a War of 1812 supply depot on the Auglaize River, and a landscape that a journal kept on General Anthony Wayne's 1794 campaign called more beautiful than any in the western country. Wapakoneta, platted in 1833 on the vacated reservation and made county seat in 1848, is known today chiefly as the boyhood home and now the given birthplace town of astronaut Neil Armstrong, first man on the Moon.

Wapakoneta grew up as a Shawnee town on the Auglaize River, its name likely from the Shawnee "Wa-po-ghkonetta," recorded as meaning roughly "place of white bones." It became the center of the Shawnee reservation set aside by the 1817 Treaty of the Maumee Rapids and led for fourteen years by chief Black Hoof, until his death in 1831 and the Shawnee removal to Kansas in 1832. Settlers platted the town in 1833 on the vacated reservation land, and it became the seat of newly organized Auglaize County in 1848; the present Auglaize County Courthouse, built 1893-1894 of Berea sandstone with its own powerhouse for electric lighting, still stands on the square and marked its centennial in 1994. Wapakoneta is now known nationally as the hometown of Neil Armstrong, first man to walk on the Moon, and is home to the Armstrong Air & Space Museum, opened in 1972.
