How New Bremen began

New Bremen grew from a stock company of German immigrants organized in Cincinnati in 1832 to found a colony town; the company's prospecting committee chose the site, and the plat, recorded in Mercer County on June 11, 1833, was named Bremen. Early settlers lived in open-sided log huts, ground flour on tin graters, and endured a cholera epidemic in 1849 that killed some 150 of the settlement's 700 residents, before the Miami and Erie Canal, reaching the village by the mid-1840s, made it a boomtown; the town was renamed New Bremen in 1835 to distinguish it from another Bremen in Ohio, and was formally incorporated in 1837. New Bremen is the home of Crown Equipment Corporation, an international forklift manufacturer, and of the Bicycle Museum of America, founded in 1997 by Crown's Jim Dicke II.

Settled 1832, platted 1833-06-11, incorporated 1837-03-23, by a stock company of 33 German immigrants organized in Cincinnati, prominently Philip Reis, Christian Carmann, P. Steiner, F. Neiter and J. B. Mesloh.

Where the name comes from

Named Bremen for the German port city many of the founding families had emigrated through; the post office and the town's name were changed to New Bremen in 1835 to distinguish it from another Bremen elsewhere in Ohio.

Before the town

No Native American sites or villages specific to present-day New Bremen were found in the sources searched; it lies within the broader area historically used by the Shawnee and Miami before 1830s settlement.

Stories

A society formed on the way from Bremen

The families who founded New Bremen did not scout the site first and then organize; they organized first. Thirty-three German immigrants, prominently Philip Reis, Christian Carmann, P. Steiner, F. Neiter and J. B. Mesloh, formed a company in Cincinnati and sent two of their number, F. H. Schroeder and A. F. Windeler, to examine sites across Ohio and Indiana. They chose a tract in what was then Mercer County, bought ten acres from the government, and had it surveyed into 102 lots, one for each member and the rest offered at $25 apiece; the plat, named Bremen, was recorded June 11, 1833. Six of the founders made the journey from Cincinnati in fourteen days and spent the rest of their lives in the colony they had built. Their huts, covered only with boards and open at the sides, let deer nose in at the straw bedding; settlers ground flour on tin graters when none could be had, and it took twenty-three miles of travel to reach the nearest supplies. By the mid-1840s the Miami and Erie Canal had turned the settlement, renamed New Bremen in 1835, into a boomtown, though not before a cholera epidemic in 1849 killed about a fifth of its seven hundred residents.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside New Bremen, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

48,463 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
