How Minster began
Minster began in 1832 as Stallostown, a settlement of German Catholic immigrants organized by Francis Joseph Stallo, who bought 640 acres for 97 fellow settlers from Cincinnati. After Stallo died in 1833, the town was renamed Minster in 1836 for Münster in Westphalia, the region many of its settlers had left. The Miami and Erie Canal reached the village in the 1840s and a rail branch line followed in 1878; Minster moved from Mercer to the new Auglaize County in 1848 and remains a heavily German Catholic village that still keeps its heritage with an annual Oktoberfest.
Settled 1832, platted 1832, by Francis Joseph Stallo and about 97 German settlers.
Where the name comes from
First platted as Stallostown for founder Francis J. Stallo, the village was renamed Minster in 1836 after Münster in Westphalia, Germany, the heavily Catholic region many of its settlers had emigrated from.
Before the town
No Native American sites or villages specific to present-day Minster were found in the sources searched; the village sits within the historic range of the Shawnee, whose principal Auglaize County towns and reservations were at Wapakoneta and Lewistown to the east.

Stories
Ninety-seven settlers and 640 acres
In 1832 a group of about 97 young German Catholics living in Cincinnati pooled their resources to buy land farther north and start their own settlement. Francis Joseph Stallo and six other men acted as agents, buying 640 acres of Auglaize County forest and prairie for $800 in silver. Trees were cleared, streets laid out, and the site divided into 144 lots as the village of Stallostown. Stallo did not live to see it grow; he died in July 1833. Three years later the settlers, still overwhelmingly German and Catholic, renamed their town Minster after Münster in Westphalia, the region most of them had left, and the low-German language and customs they brought stayed in daily use for generations.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
