How Wapakoneta began

Wapakoneta grew from a Shawnee town on the Auglaize River into the seat of Auglaize County and, in the twentieth century, the hometown of astronaut Neil Armstrong. The name comes from the Shawnee village Waapaahkonetaweeki that stood here after the 1795 Treaty of Greenville, when Chief Black Hoof (Catahecassa) led most of Ohio's remaining Shawnee to settle on a reservation centered on the town. After the Shawnee were removed to Kansas in 1832, white settlers platted the town in 1833; it was incorporated in 1849 and became county seat when Auglaize County was organized in 1848. It is now a small industrial and agricultural city best known as the birthplace of the first man to walk on the Moon.

Settled 1833 (platted), platted 1833, incorporated March 2, 1849, by American settlers on former Shawnee reservation land.

Where the name comes from

The city's name descends from the Shawnee village name recorded variously as Waughpaughkonnetta or Waapaahkonetaweeki, said by some sources to derive from a Shawnee phrase meaning roughly 'the place of white bones' or referring to a chief's name; sources differ and no single etymology is fully documented.

Before the town

Wapakoneta was one of the most important Native places in western Ohio in the early 1800s. A French trading post, Fort au Glaize, stood near the site by about 1748, and traders were active here through the British and early American periods. After the 1795 Treaty of Greenville pushed most Ohio Indians north and west of a treaty line, Shawnee bands regrouped, and by the Treaty of the Maumee Rapids (1817) the United States set aside a ten-mile-square Shawnee reservation centered on Wapakoneta, with the tribal council house in the town itself; an additional 25-square-mile tract on Hog Creek was reserved for the same band, and the 1818 Treaty of St. Mary's added roughly 12,800 acres on the reserve's east side. Chief Black Hoof (Catahecassa), the Shawnee's principal civil leader for three decades and a signer of the Greenville treaty, lived at Wapakoneta and by tradition died there at a very old age shortly before the final removal. Under an 1831 treaty the Wapakoneta and Hog Creek Shawnee ceded their reservation and were removed west to Kansas in 1832, ending organized Shawnee residence in the county.

Stories

The reservation that became the county seat

When the United States and the Shawnee signed the Treaty of the Maumee Rapids in September 1817, the government set aside a ten-mile-square reservation around Wapakoneta for the Shawnee who had gathered there under Black Hoof, plus a separate 25-square-mile tract on Hog Creek. Black Hoof had signed the Treaty of Greenville in 1795 and spent the rest of his long life urging accommodation with the United States rather than armed resistance, in contrast to Tecumseh. He is said to have died at Wapakoneta at an extraordinary age, not long before an 1831 treaty forced the sale of the reservation. In 1832 the Wapakoneta and Hog Creek Shawnee were removed to Kansas. The land they left was surveyed and platted as the town of Wapakoneta the very next year, and fifteen years later it became the seat of the newly formed Auglaize County, a straight line from reservation to courthouse square.

A farm boy from Auglaize County

Neil Armstrong was born August 5, 1930, on his grandparents' farm southwest of Wapakoneta, one of more than a dozen Ohio towns the family lived in before settling permanently in Wapakoneta in April 1944, when Neil was starting high school. He earned his student pilot's license at 16, before he had a driver's license, and graduated from Blume High School in 1947. After Purdue, Navy combat flying in Korea, and a career as a test pilot and astronaut, he commanded Apollo 11 and became the first person to walk on the Moon on July 20, 1969. The Armstrong Air & Space Museum opened in his hometown in 1972 and holds his Gemini 8 spacecraft, two of his space suits, and a Moon rock brought back on Apollo 11.

Mostly estimated. Only 21% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Wapakoneta - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.

48,862 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
