How Columbiana began
Columbiana was founded in 1805 by Joshua Dixon and William Heald, straddling parts of Beaver, Fairfield and Unity townships, and took the name of the county that surrounds it -- itself a coined tribute to Christopher Columbus. It incorporated as a village in 1837 and grew slowly around its churches, schools and small industry; the 1842 Jones-Bowman House on Pittsburgh Street, built by an abolitionist's son, is believed to have sheltered freedom-seekers on the Underground Railroad. Tire manufacturer Harvey S. Firestone, born on his grandfather's Columbiana farm in 1868, kept lifelong ties to the town, and the golf course occupying the old family homestead still carries the Firestone name. Columbiana reached city status in 2000 and remains a small, walkable Columbiana County community of about 6,500 people.
Settled 1805, platted 1805, incorporated 1837 (village); 2000 (city), by Joshua Dixon and William Heald.
Where the name comes from
Columbiana took its name directly from Columbiana County, which was itself coined from 'Columbus' -- honoring Christopher Columbus -- and the Latinate suffix '-iana'; some older accounts instead trace the county name to a blend of 'Columbus' and 'Anna'.
Before the town
No source we reviewed names a specific Native American village, camp or burial site within present Columbiana's boundaries. The town was platted in 1805, a decade after the 1795 Treaty of Greenville had confirmed the cession of this part of eastern Ohio (itself following the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh), so its founding came after organized Native settlement in the immediate area had already ended.

Stories
The farm boy who put the world on rubber tires
Harvey Samuel Firestone was born in 1868 on the Columbiana farm his grandfather had built, and grew up doing the ordinary work of a 19th-century Ohio farm family before leaving for a job with the Columbus Buggy Company. In 1890 he started making rubber tires for horse-drawn carriages, a modest trade that put him in place for the much bigger opportunity automobiles created a decade later: in 1900 he founded the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, which grew into one of the largest tire manufacturers in the world and a close, decades-long business partner of Henry Ford. Firestone never stopped identifying with his hometown -- he donated 53 acres to create Firestone Park, which opened to Columbiana residents in 1935, and the family homestead where he grew up is now the site of the Links at Firestone Farms, a golf course that opened in 2003 carrying his name over the same ground.
A house built by an abolitionist's son
When J. Jones built his two-story, L-shaped house on Pittsburgh Street in 1842 -- a spiral staircase inside, four wood-burning fireplaces, unaltered from that day to this -- he was the son of a committed abolitionist, and local tradition holds that the house served as a station on the Underground Railroad, sheltering people escaping slavery on their way north. E. Bowman bought the property in 1885, giving the house its lasting combined name, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. It stands today much as it was built, one of relatively few physical traces in the county of the network of antislavery activism that also ran through Salem and its Anti-Slavery Bugle a few miles away.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
