How Marion County began

Marion County was organized by the Ohio General Assembly on February 20, 1820 (with a boundary reorganization in 1824), and named for General Francis Marion, the South Carolina "Swamp Fox" of the Revolutionary War. Its seat, the city of Marion, was laid out in 1822 and incorporated as a village in 1829-30. The county's northern reaches lay just outside the Greenville Treaty line of 1795 and were not opened to settlement until 1819, after the United States bought the ground from the Wyandot and Delaware in the 1817 Treaty of the Maumee Rapids; a Delaware reservation granted in that same treaty lay on the county's northern edge until the Delaware band ceded it in 1829. In the twentieth century Marion became nationally known as the hometown, newspaper, and burial place of President Warren G. Harding, and as a major railroad and heavy-machinery manufacturing center built around the Marion Steam Shovel (later Marion Power Shovel) Company.

The city of Marion was platted in 1822 near the geographic center of the new county and incorporated as a village by act of the Ohio Legislature in its 1829-30 session, with Nathan Peters elected its first mayor on March 15, 1830. Marion grew through the nineteenth century as a farm-trade town and then, from the 1880s on, into a major rail junction and manufacturing center, reaching its industrial peak in the first half of the twentieth century as the home of the Marion Steam Shovel/Marion Power Shovel Company and the boyhood-to-presidency home of Warren G. Harding.
