How Green Camp began
Green Camp is a small village in southwestern Marion County at the confluence of the Scioto and Little Scioto Rivers. David Beach platted it in June 1838 on 40 acres as Berwick, a name its post office kept from 1854 until 1875, when the village was incorporated as Green Camp after the surrounding township, which the county history says was named for Capt. Green, who camped there in the War of 1812. The New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio Railroad reached it just after the Civil War, and the village grew as the market center of its farm township. It peaked at 537 residents in 1970 and had 310 in 2020.
Platted 1838, incorporated 1875, by David Beach, who owned the 40 acres platted as Berwick.
Where the name comes from
Platted as Berwick in 1838 and incorporated in 1875 as Green Camp, the name of the surrounding township. The 1883 county history says the township was named for Capt. Green, who encamped there with a company of soldiers in the War of 1812, though some held that it came from a green, grassy camping ground by the Scioto.
Before the town
No Native village, mound or trail specific to the village site itself is recorded. The surrounding township, however, held a U.S. Army blockhouse built during the War of 1812 along the 1795 Greenville Treaty line, and an early township settler, George Wright, is recorded as having lived among the Wyandot at Upper Sandusky and married a Wyandot woman before settling near what became the village.
Nations recorded here: Wyandot.

Stories
The post office that forced a new name
When David Beach laid out his forty acres at the mouth of the Little Scioto in June 1838, the first house was a 14-by-16-foot log cabin built by John Thatcher, but nobody lived in it until John G. Bradshaw moved in in May 1843. The village was called Berwick, and the post office opened in 1854 under that name with F. W. Yoe as postmaster. Another Berwick post office already existed in Seneca County, and mail got confused. In 1875, when the village was incorporated, it took the name Green Camp, which the township already bore, and the post office was renamed to match. The county history says that by 1883 the village had one dry goods store, one grocery and two churches, while the Berwick mills were assigning their property.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
