How Marion Township, Marion County began

Marion Township is the central township of Marion County, a full six-mile-square township (Township 5 South, Range 15 East) that holds the city of Marion within its 36.8 square miles. It was organized as Center Township with the county and renamed Marion Township on December 5, 1827, taking the name already given to the county and its seat for Revolutionary War general Francis Marion. The 1883 county history called it the highest single tract of land between Columbus and Toledo by the railroad survey, originally heavily timbered, with limestone quarries inside the village limits. Away from the city its landmark is the Linn School, a brick one-room schoolhouse of 1897 that served country pupils through eighth grade until 1942 and is now a museum; the township had 43,796 residents in 2020, 35,999 of them in the city.

Incorporated 1827-12-05, by renamed from Center Township by county authorities.

Where the name comes from

The township was originally organized as Center Township and renamed Marion Township on December 5, 1827, taking the name already given to the county (1820) and its seat (1822) for Revolutionary War general Francis Marion. It is one of twelve Marion Townships in Ohio.

Before the town

No Native village, mound, or trail specific to Marion Township outside the city of Marion is recorded in the sources checked. The township sits at the geographic center of the county and, like the rest of Marion County, lay within reach of Wyandot hunting grounds before the ground was opened to sale in 1819 following the 1817 Treaty of the Maumee Rapids and 1818 Treaty of St. Marys. No source located assigns a specific site to the township itself.

Nations recorded here: Wyandot.

Stories

The one-room school that outlasted its district

Built of brick in 1897 on about 800 square feet of floor space, Marion Township's Sub-District #8 School was one of dozens of one-room schoolhouses that once dotted rural Marion County, each serving the farm families within walking distance of a few square miles. Grades one through eight sat together under one teacher for more than 45 years, until the school closed in 1942 as Ohio's rural districts consolidated into larger, centralized schools reachable by bus. Rather than being torn down or left to collapse like most of its neighbors, the building survived long enough for the Marion County Historical Society to restore it, known today as the Linn School, with period desks, textbooks and supplies set up to let visitors sit through a simulated 19th-century school day. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 7, 2007, one of the last physical reminders of how rural Marion County educated its children before consolidation.

The highest ground between Columbus and Toledo

The 1883 county history says Marion Township, taken as a single tract, was the highest land between Columbus and Toledo according to the railroad survey. That is why it drains toward every point of the compass except east, and why the farmers there spent the 1870s and early 1880s ditching the eastward side so that, in the historian's phrase, the land was being raised many feet above water level. The township was originally covered with fine timber except for grassy swales and low grounds, which the writer expected to turn into the most fertile land once drained. Building stone was inexhaustible, and the quarries ran even inside the village limits. The old Marion Cemetery north of the New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio depot was still under the township trustees in 1883, little used and neglected, some of its dead having been moved to the new cemetery.
