How Claridon Township, Marion County began

Claridon Township lies in eastern Marion County along the Whetstone (Olentangy) River and is one of only two Marion County townships to keep a full six-mile-square survey, after the Court of Common Pleas twice undid attempts to give its northern tier to Scott Township. English families, among them Hornby, Thew and Douce, settled around the old town of Claridon from 1820. Col. James Kilbourne platted Claridon on August 25, 1821, the first town in the county, hoping to win the county seat, but a state committee chose Marion in 1823. Caledonia, laid out in 1834 in the northeast corner, became the township's only village, and the township had 2,777 residents in 2020 including Caledonia.

Settled 1820, by Nathan Clark and family, first settlers.

Where the name comes from

The reason for the name Claridon is not recorded; Ohio's only other Claridon Township is in Geauga County, and no connection between the two has been documented.

Before the town

No mound, earthwork or named Native village is recorded inside Claridon Township. The 1883 county history says a number of Wyandot Indians still lingered here when settlement began, naming Tom Lyons, Standing Stone and Between the Logs; it is not known whether this Between the Logs is the Wyandot chief of that name. The township lies north of the Greenville Treaty line of 1795.

Nations recorded here: Wyandot.

Timeline

  1. — Nathan Clark arrives from Connecticut with his family in the spring, among the first settlers of what becomes Claridon Township, settling near the Whetstone River.
  2. — A Methodist Episcopal society of seven members, the first religious society in Marion County, was formed at Jacob Aye's log cabin near Claridon with Vinal Steward as local preacher and class leader.
  3. — English families including Hornby, Thew, Douce, Hinds, Fields, Welbourn and Boulton settled near the Whetstone in the southeast, forming what the county history calls an English settlement of no small pretension.
  4. — William S. Aye, son of settler Jacob Aye, is born in the township, recorded as the first white child born within its limits.
  5. — Col. James Kilbourne surveyed the town of Claridon on Joshua Bearse's land, 102 acres with a donated public square, and its plat was recorded; it was the first town platted in Marion County.
  6. — Rebecca Aye taught the township's first school in her own house during the summer.
  7. — William Garberson, arrived from Pennsylvania, starts a tannery in the township, described in the county history as a great convenience to early settlers.
  8. — A committee appointed by the state to choose the county seat passed over Claridon, the first town platted in Marion County, and selected the newly laid-out Marion instead.
  9. — Further settler families, including Boyce, Mitchell, Underwood, Gable, Holverstott, Smith, Lawrence, Owens and Fields, take up land in the township.
  10. — George Ulsh settled on the Columbus and Sandusky Turnpike lands, the first settler along that road in the township, and kept a tavern for more than seven years.
  11. — Philip Slick opened a public house at the crossing of the roads that later became the railroad crossing, so that the spot was still called Slick's Station in 1883.
  12. — John Parcel builds the first mill in Caledonia, a water-powered structure with two grinding stones.
  13. — Scott Township won an order from the county commissioners attaching Claridon's northern tier of six sections, but Garry Clark appealed and the Court of Common Pleas restored the land; a repeat attempt in 1851 failed the same way.
  14. — The Claridon Methodist congregation raised the 30-by-48-foot Claridon church, replacing the hewed-log English Chapel built about 1832.
  15. — The county commissioners split Claridon into a North or Caledonia precinct and a South or Claridon precinct along the east-west township road.
  16. — Dr. J. W. Devore of Claridon represented Marion County in the Ohio legislature.
  17. — The two-story brick Claridon schoolhouse in District No. 6 was built at a cost of nearly $4,000.
  18. — The census counted 2,777 residents in the 36.8-square-mile township, 560 of them in Caledonia.

Stories

Claridon, the town that lost the county seat

In 1821 the English settlers on the Whetstone had Col. James Kilbourne survey a town of 102 acres on Joshua Bearse's land. They named it Claridon, set aside a large square for county buildings, and made the avenues six rods wide. It was the first town platted in what became Marion County and sat near the center of the territory, so its people expected to win the seat of the new county; George Shippy kept a log tavern, Ansel Matoon the forge, and a cabinet-maker and a tanner set up shop. Then, in the autumns of 1822 and 1823, unusual sickness and death swept the village. In the spring of 1823 the state's committee looked over the sites and chose Marion, which had only just been laid out. The 1883 history says a killing frost nipped the village in the bud and that settlers kept coming to the surrounding country along the valley, while the town itself never recovered; only a few houses stood to mark the site.
