How Marion began

Marion was laid out in 1821-1822 on the Scioto Trail at the site chosen as the seat of the newly formed Marion County, and was incorporated as a village by act of the Ohio legislature in the 1829-1830 session, with Nathan Peters as its first mayor from March 1830. It was named for General Francis Marion, the Revolutionary War partisan leader known as the 'Swamp Fox.' The city grew into a major manufacturing center, producing an estimated 80 percent of the country's steam shovels by 1911 through the Marion Steam Shovel Company (later Marion Power Shovel), whose machines were used on the Panama Canal and the Hoover Dam. It is best known nationally as the hometown of the 29th U.S. president, Warren G. Harding, who ran his 1920 'front porch campaign' from his Mount Vernon Avenue home and is entombed in the city with his wife Florence.

Settled 1821, platted 1822, incorporated 1829-1830 (legislative session; first mayor took office March 15, 1830), by Platted as the seat of newly organized Marion County.

Where the name comes from

The city and county were named in honor of General Francis Marion of South Carolina, the Revolutionary War militia commander nicknamed the 'Swamp Fox.'

Before the town

Marion County sits in a part of central Ohio crossed by Native trails that ran along the low ridges between the Scioto and Sandusky drainages; local histories describe Indian trails in the county as generally following older buffalo traces along the hilltops. The nearby village of La Rue, a few miles northwest of Marion in Marion County, stood at or near the site of a Wyandot village occupied before the tribe's removal in the 1830s-40s. The Wyandot held the Grand Reserve around Upper Sandusky, about 25 miles north of Marion, until they were forced onto the Wyandot Removal Trail in 1843, walking roughly 150 miles from Upper Sandusky to Cincinnati under the terms of the 1842 Treaty of Upper Sandusky. No mounds, earthworks, or named village sites specific to the city of Marion itself turned up in the sources checked; the record found is county- and region-level rather than site-specific to the city.

Nations recorded here: Wyandot.

  2. — The Ohio legislature incorporates Marion as a village; Nathan Peters becomes the first mayor on March 15, 1830.
  3. — William Mitchell, accused by a group of Virginians of being a fugitive slave, is tried in the Marion courthouse before Judge Ozias Bowen, who rules him free on August 27; a riot follows when the Virginians try to seize him anyway, and Mitchell escapes to Canada.
  4. — The present Marion County Courthouse, designed by architect David W. Gibbs, is built on Courthouse Square for $115,000; the cornerstone was laid July 4, 1884.
  5. — Warren G. Harding and Florence Kling design and build the Queen Anne-style house at 380 Mount Vernon Avenue where they marry and where Harding lives until 1921.
  6. — Marion builds its first municipal sewage treatment plant, completed and placed in full operation in 1905.
  7. — By this year Marion is producing an estimated 80 percent of the nation's steam shovels, through firms including the Marion Steam Shovel Company.
  8. — The state health department finds Marion's 1905 sewage plant inadequate and a source of pollution to the Rock Swale Ditch, prompting design of a replacement.
  9. — In February, following an alleged assault, nearly all of Marion's Black residents are driven out of the city, an episode that left Marion functioning as a sundown town.
  10. — Senator Warren G. Harding conducts his presidential 'front porch campaign' from his Mount Vernon Avenue home; more than 600,000 visitors travel to Marion to hear him speak before his election that November.
  11. — Dog-kennel owner Walter Lingo of nearby La Rue fields the NFL's Oorang Indians, an all-Native traveling team coached by Jim Thorpe; of its 20 games over two seasons, the only 'home' game was played in Marion.
  12. — Marion's modern sewage treatment plant, designed by consulting engineer George Gascoigne, goes into service; it is noted as one of the few Ohio plants achieving complete treatment year-round. The 146-room Hotel Harding, designed by William Earl Russ, also opens on February 1, 1924.
  13. — The circular Doric memorial to Warren and Florence Harding, designed by Henry Hornbostel, Eric Fisher Wood, and Edward Mellon, is completed at Marion Cemetery; the Hardings, first buried in the cemetery's receiving vault, are reinterred there.
  14. — President Herbert Hoover dedicates the Harding Tomb on June 16.
  15. — Marion's sewage plant is upgraded to produce methane from its digesters for plant heating and its capacity is expanded to 5.4 million gallons a day, serving about 40,000 residents.
  16. — A $12.5 million activated-sludge treatment facility replaces the aging plant, raising capacity to 10.5 million gallons a day under EPA mandate.
  17. — A $23 million upgrade adds a SCADA control system to the Marion wastewater plant.
  18. — In December, Aqua Ohio's Marion customers report a strong earthy, chemical-like taste and odor in their tap water; the company attributes it to organic compounds (geosmin) in the surface-water supply and adjusts its intake mix and treatment process, drawing more than 70 complaints to Ohio EPA.
  19. — In July, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio approves an Aqua Ohio water rate increase of about $9.5 million a year (down from the $13.4 million requested) plus roughly $1.04 million in additional wastewater costs, following a public hearing at Marion City Hall in January 2026.

Stories

The 1839 Marion riot

In July 1839, a group of men from Virginia rode into Marion and seized a Black resident, William Mitchell (also recorded as William Anderson), claiming he was an escaped slave. Mitchell had lived in the town for at least a year. He was brought before Judge Ozias Bowen of the Court of Common Pleas under Ohio's newly passed 1839 Fugitive Slave Act, and on August 27, in a packed courthouse, Bowen ruled the Virginians' claim invalid and declared Mitchell a free man. The Virginians tried to grab Mitchell anyway as he left the courthouse. A crowd of Marion residents fought them off in the street, breaking into the town armory and passing out weapons; a riot between pro- and anti-slavery factions followed and drew national newspaper coverage. Mitchell got away and made it to Canada. Ohio's 1839 Fugitive Slave Act itself was so unpopular that public pressure forced its repeal within four years.

The front porch campaign

In 1920, Marion Star publisher and U.S. Senator Warren G. Harding ran for president largely without leaving home. From the wraparound porch of the Queen Anne house he and Florence Kling had built together in 1891 at 380 Mount Vernon Avenue, Harding delivered speeches to delegations that traveled to Marion from across the country; a press house was built next door to handle the reporters. Over the course of the campaign more than 600,000 people are estimated to have visited. Harding won the election that November on a platform of 'return to normalcy' and served until his death in office in 1923. The house, with almost all of its original furnishings intact, is now a National Historic Landmark museum operated by the Ohio History Connection.

A dog-kennel owner's NFL team

In 1922 and 1923, the NFL's smallest-ever franchise, the Oorang Indians, was based in nearby La Rue, and the only 'home' game of its twenty was played in Marion. The team was the brainchild of Walter Lingo, who ran the Oorang Kennels in nearby La Rue (population under a thousand, with no football field of its own) and organized an all-Native roster purely to advertise his Airedale terriers. He hired the great Olympian Jim Thorpe as player-coach at $500 a week to recruit players from the Cherokee, Mohawk, Chippewa, Blackfeet, Winnebago, Mission, Caddo, Sac and Fox, Seneca, and Penobscot nations. The team won only four league games in two seasons, but the kennels it advertised thrived until 1929.

Building the sewage plant Ohio pointed to as a model

Marion's first sewage treatment plant went into service in 1905, but within eleven years the Ohio Department of Health found it inadequate and blamed it for polluting the Rock Swale Ditch. The city hired consulting engineer George Gascoigne to design a replacement, which opened in 1924 and was singled out as one of the few plants in Ohio achieving complete treatment of its wastewater year-round. The plant has been rebuilt several times since: digesters were converted to produce heating methane in the 1950s, an activated-sludge facility replaced the aging works in 1978 under federal mandate, and a $23 million SCADA upgrade modernized plant controls in 2003. It now treats an average of 8.5 million gallons a day, removing 96 percent or more of incoming organic and solid material before discharging to the Little Scioto River.

89% of these days are measurements from a gauge inside Marion; the rest are estimated from the nearest gauges around it.

48,845 days of records, 1892-12-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
