How Knox County began
Knox County was organized by the Ohio General Assembly on March 1, 1808, from the northern part of Fairfield County, and named for General Henry Knox, the Revolutionary War artillery commander who became the nation's first Secretary of War. Its seat, Mount Vernon, was platted in 1805 on the Owl Creek (Kokosing River) and named for George Washington's Virginia estate, several years before the county itself existed. The land had been Delaware (Lenape) hunting ground along the Kokosing, whose Lenape name means roughly "river of little owls" (rendered Owl Creek by early settlers); the Greenville Treaty line of 1795 itself crosses the county near Fredericktown, so the eastern and northern parts of Knox County were not ceded to the United States until treaties later than 1795. The county grew as a farming and milling county on the Glaciated Allegheny Plateau, then gained two institutions that gave it a wider name: Kenyon College, moved to a hilltop above the Kokosing at Gambier in 1824-25 by Episcopal Bishop Philander Chase, and Mount Vernon native Daniel Decatur Emmett, the blackface minstrel performer and fiddler who wrote "Dixie" in 1859.
Mount Vernon was platted in 1805 -- three years before Knox County itself was organized -- on the Owl Creek (Kokosing River), and named after Mount Vernon, George Washington's Virginia estate. It grew from 314 residents in 1810 to become the county's seat of justice and largest city, reaching over 9,000 residents by 1910. The city's downtown includes the Woodward Opera House, built in 1851 and later restored, described as one of the oldest surviving opera-house theaters of its kind in the country. Mount Vernon suffered a disruptive telephone-exchange fire in 1953 and a major flood in 1959 that evacuated roughly 500 homes and caused about $5 million in damage.
