How Hilliar Township, Knox County began
Hilliar Township, in the southwest corner of Knox County, was established in 1818 and named for Dr. Richard Hilliar, an early landowner who bought about 1,800 acres and settled his family there in 1806, five years before he died. Houck-family settlers arriving around 1809 opened the township to farming; a sawmill Jacob Houck built on the north fork of the Licking Creek in 1835 anchored early industry. Its village, Centerburg, was surveyed in 1830 at the center of the township, and remains the township's only incorporated place. Growth from the Columbus commuter shed has more than doubled the township's population since 1990.

Where the name comes from
The township is named for Dr. Richard Hilliar, who purchased about 1,800 acres in the area in 1805 and moved his family there in 1806; he died in September 1811. The nearby community of Rich Hill is also named for him.
Before the town
No source found documents a Native village, mound, or specific encounter located within Hilliar Township's present bounds. The Knox County Historical Society's township history notes that 'conflict with native Indians slowed area growth until after the War of 1812' and that a blockhouse stood five miles west of the Houck Settlement as a refuge for settlers, which places at least one War of 1812-era defensive structure in or near the township, though the source does not give it a name or exact site. Knox County as a whole was Wyandot, Shawnee, and Delaware (Lenape) territory before removal, with Adena mound-building evidence closer to Mount Vernon (the McLaughlin Mound) than to Hilliar Township.

The seven-mile woods
Before the state built what became Route 3 and Route 36 through the township, residents of the Houck Settlement had no direct link to the county's road network and built their own connecting road themselves in the early 1810s. When the state road finally came through in 1829, travelers making the trip through Hilliar Township's stretch of unbroken timber gave it a name of its own: 'the 7 mile woods.' The name stuck in local memory as shorthand for how thickly forested the township still was two decades after Dr. Hilliar's first cabin went up, and for how much labor its early families put into simply reaching the outside world.
