How Crawford County began

Crawford County was carved mostly out of the Wyandot-held 'New Purchase' lands ceded at the Foot of the Rapids of the Maumee in 1817, set off by the legislature on February 20, 1820, and finally organized as a functioning county on January 31, 1826, with its first court sitting that July in a settler's living room on the Sandusky River. It was named for Colonel William Crawford, the Virginia militia officer captured a few miles inside its eastern boundary near Leesville in June 1782 and burned at the stake days later at Tymochtee Creek, in what is now Wyandot County. The county seat, Bucyrus, was laid out in 1821-22 by Colonel James Kilbourne (founder of Worthington) and Samuel Norton, the region's first settler. Today it is a rural, heavily agricultural county of just over 400 square miles, drained by the Sandusky and Olentangy rivers, known for Bucyrus's bratwurst festival and its 19th-century courthouse square.

Bucyrus was platted in 1821-22 under articles of agreement (dated October 4, 1821) between Colonel James Kilbourne, founder of Worthington and a state surveyor, and Samuel Norton, who with his family, Albijence Bucklin's family, and Seth Holmes had arrived at the site as the area's first white settlers (in 1817 by the county genealogical society's history, in October 1819 by the Bucyrus Historical Society). Kilbourne named the town; the origin of 'Bucyrus' is disputed, with the leading story holding he combined 'beautiful' with the name of Cyrus the Great, and a competing story deriving it from Busiris, a city of ancient Egypt. Bucyrus became the official county seat in 1830; Kilbourne donated the courthouse lots and designed the first courthouse, built in 1832 by contractor Zalmon Rowse in the style of the old Ohio statehouse. The current courthouse, at Mansfield and Walnut streets, was built 1854-1856 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Named in honor of Colonel William Crawford, a Virginia-born Revolutionary War militia officer who led an expedition against Wyandot and Delaware towns on the Sandusky River in 1782, was captured after the expedition collapsed, and was tortured and burned at the stake on June 11, 1782, on the banks of Tymochtee Creek (in what is now Wyandot County, formed out of Crawford County's western end in 1845).
