How Bucyrus began

Bucyrus was founded in 1821-1822 when Colonel James Kilbourne, who had earlier founded Worthington, platted a town on land Samuel Norton had settled with a party of eighteen along the Sandusky River since October 1819. It became the seat of Crawford County (created 1820) in 1830 and grew as a railroad and manufacturing town, home to the Bucyrus Foundry (later Bucyrus-Erie, a major steam shovel and excavator maker before it relocated to Wisconsin in 1893) and later the Swan Rubber Company, once the city's largest employer. The origin of the name is disputed even locally: Kilbourne is said to have wanted a name unlike any other place on earth, and stories point either to 'beautiful Cyrus' (after the Persian king, with 'bu' for beautiful) or to Busiris, an ancient Egyptian city. Today Bucyrus markets itself as the 'Bratwurst Capital of America.'

Settled 1819, platted 1821-1822, incorporated 1830 (county seat), by Samuel Norton (settler) and Col. James Kilbourne (platted the town).

Where the name comes from

Kilbourne reportedly wanted 'a name for this town different from that of any place inhabited by man since the world was created.' One tradition holds he combined 'bu' (for beautiful) with Cyrus, the Persian general/king, for 'beautiful Cyrus.' Another traces it to Busiris, an ancient Egyptian city, adapted to a name Kilbourne found phonetically pleasing. No single account is confirmed.

Before the town

The land that became Bucyrus lay just east of the Wyandot reservation centered on Upper Sandusky, and the wider area was Wyandot and Delaware (Lenape) territory before white settlement following the War of 1812. The defining Native-American event tied to this ground is not in Bucyrus itself but a day's ride northwest: in 1782 an American militia force under Col. William Crawford (for whom the county is named) marched up from the Ohio Valley to attack Wyandot and allied towns along the upper Sandusky River. The expedition was routed on the Sandusky Plains, and Crawford, separated from his retreating men, was captured and on June 11, 1782 was tortured and burned at the stake on the banks of the Tymochtee Creek in what is now Wyandot County, in retaliation for the American militia's massacre of unarmed Christian Lenape at Gnadenhutten earlier that year. No village, mound, or trail specific to the Bucyrus town site itself is documented in the sources checked; for prehistoric-culture sites and treaty cessions covering the county generally.

Nations recorded here: Wyandot, Lenape (Delaware).

Stories

A name unlike any other place on earth

When Col. James Kilbourne laid out the new town on Samuel Norton's land in 1821, local tradition says he insisted on a name that had never belonged to any other place inhabited by man. He is said to have settled on a compound of 'bu,' for beautiful, and Cyrus, the Persian general and king he admired, giving 'beautiful Cyrus.' A rival account holds he adapted it from Busiris, an ancient Egyptian city, simply because he liked the sound. Neither story is confirmed by a document in Kilbourne's own hand, and Bucyrus remains one of the few towns in Ohio, or the country, that shares its name with nowhere else.

From a wigwam on the Sandusky to a county seat

In October 1819, Samuel Norton arrived from Pennsylvania with eighteen people: his wife Mary, six children, his wife's brother Albigence Bucklin and his family, and a guide named Seth Holmes. Finding no cabin ready, the party sheltered in a wigwam before building log cabins along the Sandusky River before winter. Norton eventually bought 400 acres, the ground the center of Bucyrus still stands on. Two years later he and Kilbourne platted the town together, and by 1830, with Crawford County only a decade old, Bucyrus had been named the county seat.

The 1913 flood

In late March 1913, days of heavy rain across Ohio produced what is still ranked the state's worst natural disaster, with the Sandusky River basin among the hardest hit in the northwest. At Bucyrus the river reached a flood stage of about 14.5 feet, well above normal, sending water into downtown streets. A surviving real-photo postcard shows horses, carriages and onlookers wading a flooded street, one of the only images that documents the event in the city itself; downstream at Tiffin the same flood destroyed every bridge in town.

Almost every day here is a measurement: 95% of them come from a rain gauge standing inside Bucyrus itself.

48,774 days of records, 1892-12-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
