How Galion began

Galion grew from a crossroads settled by Benjamin Leveridge and his sons in 1817, one of several early names (Goshen, Hard Scrabble, Moccasin, Horseshoe) before a post office was established under the name Galion in 1825; the town had asked for 'Goshen,' but Postmaster General John McLean changed the name because Ohio already had a Goshen. It was platted in 1831 on the theory that Col. James Kilbourne, the founder of Worthington and Bucyrus, wanted a town midway between Columbus and Lake Erie. Rail service arrived in 1851, championed by Asa Hosford, known locally as the 'Father of Galion,' and the town grew into a manufacturing center for road graders, sanitation trucks, and telephone equipment, with the Big Four Depot as the visible landmark of that railroad-era prosperity.

Where the name comes from

The crossroads carried several earlier informal names, including Moccasin, Horseshoe, Hard Scrabble, and Goshen. The town petitioned in 1824 for a post office named Goshen; Postmaster General John McLean changed the name to Galion because Ohio already had a Goshen, and the office was established under that name in 1825. The ultimate origin and meaning of 'Galion' itself is not established in the sources checked.

Before the town

Native people, recorded in local sources as Wyandot, occupied a camp on the south side of the Whetstone Creek (the historic name for the stream now called the Olentangy), east of the present Catholic Cemetery in Galion, at the time the first white settlers arrived in 1817. Those settlers initially named their own village Whetstone after the creek; Ohio officials later renamed the creek 'Olentangy' in a mistaken attempt to restore what they believed was its original Native name. An old army road, cut for troop movement in 1812, ran through the area and was likely the first road cut by white men through the vicinity, following existing travel routes. No mound, earthwork, or treaty line specific to the town site is documented in the sources checked beyond this camp; for the county's fuller prehistoric-culture and treaty record.

Stories

A town by five other names

Before it was Galion, the crossroads in southern Crawford County went by a string of names that read like a settler's diary of frustration and hope: Moccasin, Horseshoe, Hard Scrabble, Goshen. When the town asked for a post office under the name Goshen, Postmaster General John McLean changed it because Ohio already had a Goshen, and the office opened in 1825 as 'Galion,' though even now no one is certain what it originally meant or where McLean got it. The town was platted six years later, in 1831, on the idea, credited to Worthington and Bucyrus founder Col. James Kilbourne, of placing a town roughly halfway between Columbus and Lake Erie.

Asa Hosford and the railroad that built the town

Galion was a farm crossroads for its first three decades. That changed in 1851 when Asa Hosford, remembered locally as the 'Father of Galion,' succeeded in bringing rail service through the town. The railroad turned Galion into a manufacturing center, producing road graders, sanitation equipment, and telephone systems in the decades that followed. The most visible legacy of that era is the Big Four Depot, dedicated in 1900 as division headquarters for the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad, which served as an active rail office until 1969 and is now preserved by the city and the nonprofit Galion Depot, Inc.
