How Adams County began

Adams County was established July 10, 1797 by proclamation of Northwest Territory governor Arthur St. Clair, making it one of Ohio's oldest counties, and was named for President John Adams. West Union has been the county seat since the county's early years. The county lies in Ohio's unglaciated Appalachian foothills along the Ohio River and is best known for Serpent Mound, the great effigy earthwork in the county's north-central townships, and for the Brush Creek iron furnaces built from 1811, a separate field from the Hanging Rock region to the east. It remains rural and, by 2019 reporting, was the poorest county in Ohio by poverty rate.

West Union, laid out in 1803 and incorporated in 1859, has served as the Adams County seat; a post office under the village's name opened in 1805.
