How Seaman began
Seaman was laid out in 1888 on the lands of Mrs. Ann Mower in Scott Township after the Cincinnati & Eastern Railroad, later the Cincinnati, Portsmouth & Virginia, was extended from Winchester toward Portsmouth; Wikipedia says it was named for the local Seaman family. J. Q. Roads kept its first store, and about 1900 Evans and Stivers counted two dry goods stores, a hardware and implement store, a saw mill, two hotels and 175 people. The Mount Zion Methodist church from the northeast of the township was moved into the village. Seaman peaked at 1,039 residents in 1980 and 2000 and had 973 in 2020; since 2007 it has been home to the Adams County Regional Medical Center, moved from West Union.

Stories
The village the railroad made
Seaman did not exist until the Cincinnati & Eastern narrow-gauge railroad came. The line's first train reached Winchester on August 7, 1877, and the road was extended toward Portsmouth; Evans and Stivers calls Seaman one of the new and thriving villages that sprang up along it. It was laid out in 1888 on the land of Mrs. Ann Mower in Scott Township, and J. Q. Roads kept the first store. Older trading places already stood nearby: Tranquility, where John T. Wilson had opened a store in 1832, and Youngsville, two miles south, where David Young opened one in 1840. The Methodists of Mount Zion, whose frame church had stood in the northeast corner of the township since 1868, moved it into the new village, where it stood in 1900, when the county history counted two hotels, two livery stables and 175 people. The hospital that serves Adams County stands there now, moved from West Union in 2007.

48,485 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address.
