How West Union began
West Union was laid out in 1803 and has served as the Adams County seat since the county's early years, with a post office opening in 1805. The village grew from 229 residents in 1810 to over 1,000 by 1900 and stood at 3,004 in the 2020 census. It holds a cluster of National Register buildings in its historic core, including the Cockerill House and West Union Presbyterian Church, though several sites the water system's records associate with West Union's ZIP code, including the Kirker Covered Bridge and Thomas Kirker Homestead, actually stand in surrounding Liberty and Tiffin townships.
Platted 1803, incorporated 1859.
Where the name comes from
No source consulted gives a documented origin for the name "West Union"; despite the name, the village lies east of Union, Ohio (Montgomery County), a geographic irony noted on Wikipedia but not an explanation of the name's origin.
Before the town
No native-specific sites or events tied to the village of West Union itself were found in the sources consulted. Elsewhere in Adams County, the Native record includes Serpent Mound and the Adams County Paleo-Indian District.

Stories
A false trail of shared ZIP codes
The water system's own records group West Union together with the Kirker Covered Bridge and the Gov. Thomas Kirker Homestead, because all three share the 45693 ZIP code. But the National Register of Historic Places' own Adams County listing places both firmly in Liberty Township, several miles from the village: the bridge carries Ohio Route 136 over East Fork Eagle Creek and was named for Thomas Kirker, Ohio's second governor, who settled in Liberty Township in 1793 or 1794 after emigrating from Ireland. The Treber Inn, an 1798 log building on Zane's Trace, sits five miles northeast of West Union on State Route 41 and is likewise in Tiffin Township, not the village itself. West Union's own confirmed National Register buildings are the Cockerill House, the West Union Presbyterian Church, and the Tet Woods Building, all inside the village. A ZIP code covers a wide rural area in Adams County, and it is not a reliable stand-in for a town limit.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside West Union, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.
48,418 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
