How Preble County began

Preble County was formed on March 1, 1808 from parts of Butler and Montgomery counties, thirteen years after the Treaty of Greenville opened this part of southwestern Ohio to American settlement and less than two decades after it had been Miami and Shawnee hunting and settlement territory. It was named for Edward Preble, a Revolutionary War and First Barbary War naval officer, and its seat, Eaton, grew up around Fort St. Clair, an army supply post built in 1792 that was the site of a Native attack that November. The county remained rural and agricultural through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, its twelve townships filling with farm-trade villages, covered bridges and small mills, and it is known today for Sherwood Anderson (born in Camden), Benjamin Hanby's Christmas carol written in New Paris, and a run of Barbary Wars place names running through Eaton's own streets.

Eaton was platted in 1806 by William Bruce on ground that had held Fort St. Clair, a U.S. Army supply post built in 1792, and became the county seat when Preble County organized in 1808. The county's first courthouse, designed by Andrew House and built by William Bruce with Matthew, Robert and John Harbison, went up from 1816 to 1820 for about $1,000. A larger two-story courthouse designed and built by N.G. and S.H. Lockwood replaced it from 1848 to 1851 at a cost of $22,000 -- the courthouse scorched by an 1859 downtown fire. The current courthouse, a four-story Neo-Classical and Greek Revival building of gray Indiana limestone with a central rotunda and a 2,000-square-foot skylight, was designed by Harvey H. Hiestand with Richards, McCarty and Bulford of Columbus, built by the M.J. Roche Construction Company of Cincinnati from 1916 to 1918, and cost $290,456.
