How Lewisburg began

Lewisburg was established soon after Harrison Township organized in 1816 and was named for Lewisburg, Virginia (now West Virginia); by 1833 it had grown to about 200 people with a Lutheran church, four stores and two taverns. A second village, Euphemia, was platted just to its north in 1839 by county surveyor John Mumma, who named it for his wife and built it along the planned route of the National Road; Euphemia boomed with taverns and shops until the Dayton Turnpike diverted traffic away from it and its fortunes declined. Lewisburg, which had secured the railroad, annexed Euphemia, and the two villages officially merged on April 4, 1916, keeping the Lewisburg name. The combined village's population jumped 64.1 percent by 1920 and later peaked at 1,820 in 2010.

Platted soon after 1816.

Where the name comes from

Lewisburg was named after Lewisburg, Virginia (now in West Virginia). The neighboring village it later absorbed, Euphemia, was named by its founder, surveyor John Mumma, for his wife.

Stories

The boomtown the turnpike left behind

In May 1839, John Mumma, the Preble County surveyor, laid out a new village on 158 acres he had bought for $7,900, betting on the coming National Road to make it a stop worth having. He named the place Euphemia, for his wife, and for a while the bet paid off: the young town filled up with three taverns, dry goods stores, three blacksmith shops, carriage makers, a clothing store and its own post office, all built along the road's projected line just north of the older village of Lewisburg. Then the Dayton Turnpike went in on a different route, and the traffic that had made Euphemia worth building simply stopped coming. Lewisburg, meanwhile, secured a railroad connection Euphemia never got. Over the following decades Euphemia withered while its neighbor grew, and when annexation finally came up for a vote, Lewisburg's own council split evenly, five in favor and five against, leaving the mayor to cast the tie-breaking vote for unification. The merger became official on April 4, 1916; Euphemia's name survives only on a historical marker, while its people, its buildings and even its high school students became Lewisburg's.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
