How West Manchester began

West Manchester, in Monroe Township in northern Preble County, grew alongside Eldorado as one of the two principal towns on the Dayton and Western Railroad line through the township, entirely after the railroad was built. Its predecessor was Hagerstown, about a mile northeast, which held the township's first post office from 1832 until the office was moved to West Manchester in 1855. Its population rose from 229 in 1880 to a high of 445 in 1910 before settling into a long, gentle decline; it stood at 415 at the 2020 census. The village today has a branch of the Preble County District Library.

Where the name comes from

No source consulted gives a documented origin for the name West Manchester; it is left open rather than guessed at. The 1881 county history records that the settlement grew up entirely since the building of the Dayton & Western railroad, succeeding an earlier and now nearly vanished settlement called Hagerstown about a mile to the northeast.

Stories

The town that succeeded Hagerstown

Before there was a West Manchester, there was Hagerstown, a small settlement about a mile to the northeast that held the first post office in this part of Monroe Township starting August 29, 1832, under postmaster Jacob F. Miller. When the Dayton & Western Railroad was built through the area decades later, business and population drained away from Hagerstown toward the new rail-line settlements. The post office itself made the move official on December 5, 1855, relocating to West Manchester under postmaster John Felton. By 1881 the county historian could write that Hagerstown was scarcely recognizable and existed 'more in its name than in anything else,' while West Manchester, alongside its twin town Eldorado, grew into the township's commercial center.

48,250 days of records, 1893-06-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
