How Monroe Township, Preble County began

Monroe Township, in the northern part of Preble County, was severed from Washington Township on September 29, 1817, one of the last parts of the county to be settled because its boggy, poorly drained soil discouraged early pioneers. Josiah Davisson's 1816 entry on section fourteen is the only firmly dated first arrival, though 'old daddy' Charles Armantrout was there earlier still, at a time so early that Native people stopped at his cabin to warm themselves and borrow fire. It is served by National Trail High School and crossed in its southern part by Interstate 70. It contains the Geeting Covered Bridge and, at the Twin Creek-Banta's Fork confluence on its southern edge (in adjoining Lanier Township), the mound where an 1865 farmer found a centuries-old arrowhead embedded deep inside a felled poplar tree. Like most Ohio townships of its era, it takes its name from a U.S. president, James Monroe. The township had 2,084 residents at the 2020 census.

Settled by 1816 (Josiah Davisson, section 14); earlier still per Charles Armantrout's undated arrival, incorporated 1817-09-29 (severed from Washington Township), by Preble County commissioners.

Where the name comes from

Monroe Township was named for President James Monroe, following the common Ohio practice of naming townships for presidents.

Before the town

No mound or village site was recorded within Monroe Township's own boundaries in the sources checked, but the 1881 county history places 'the famous mound, attributed to the Mound Builders' at the confluence of Banta's Fork and Twin Creek, just across the township's southern line in Lanier Township. Within Monroe Township itself, the same history records that Charles Armantrout's cabin was built at such an early date that Native people passing through would stop to ask permission to warm themselves and to borrow fire to roast potatoes. In 1865, farmer P. M. Pense felled a large poplar tree on his land and found a stone arrowhead embedded seven feet up the trunk, with about three hundred growth rings recorded outside it -- read by the 1881 historian as placing the arrow's flight in the 1500s, well before European contact.

Nations recorded here: Miami, Shawnee.

Stories

An arrow three hundred rings deep

In 1865, a Monroe Township farmer named P. M. Pense felled one of the huge old poplar trees still standing on his land. Seven feet up from the ground, buried deep in the heartwood, he found the broken-off head of an arrow -- the bowman who fired it, whoever he was, had snapped off the shaft and left the flint point behind, embedded in living wood that then kept growing around it for generations. Pense counted roughly three hundred growth rings in the wood that had formed outside the arrowhead after it lodged there. The county historian who recorded the find in 1881, working from the belief that a tree adds one ring of girth a year, worked out that the arrow must have been shot sometime in the sixteenth century -- long before any European had set foot in the Twin Creek valley. He allowed that the story sounded almost too remarkable to credit, but could see nothing impossible in it. The flint was still in the finder's possession when the county history was written.
