How Hardin County began

Hardin County was carved out of remaining Indian Territory by the Ohio General Assembly on April 1, 1820, but was not organized for county government until 1833, once white settlement -- which had begun only around 1830 -- was substantial enough to support it; in the interim it was attached to Logan County. It was named for Colonel John Hardin, a Virginia-born Revolutionary War officer and Kentucky militia leader killed in May 1792 while carrying peace terms to Native people near the Sandusky River during the Northwest Indian War. Its seat, Kenton, grew up around Fort McArthur, a War of 1812 blockhouse built in 1812 by Colonel Duncan McArthur to guard the Scioto River crossing, and was platted afterward and named for the frontiersman and scout Simon Kenton. The county's land had been Wyandot and Shawnee hunting and village ground into the 1810s -- Wyandot chief Roundhead's own village stood at the site of present Roundhead, and the last Indian village in the county is recorded as abandoned in 1817 -- before passing into the county's agricultural era of grain, livestock and, on its reclaimed marshland, onions and other muck-soil truck crops, an era it shares with Henry Solomon Lehr's 1871 teacher-training school at Ada that grew into Ohio Northern University.

Kenton began as Fort McArthur, a blockhouse built in 1812 by Colonel Duncan McArthur on the Scioto River to guard a crossing on the military road north from central Ohio during the War of 1812; a cemetery near the fort site still holds the graves of sixteen soldiers from that era. The town was platted afterward and named for Simon Kenton, the Kentucky and Ohio frontier scout, and was chosen as county seat when Hardin County organized in 1833. Kenton incorporated as a village in 1845 and became a city in 1886; its courthouse square today anchors the Kenton Courthouse Square Historic District (National Register, August 23, 1984). The Mad River Railroad's first train reached Kenton on July 14, 1846, opening the town to markets and manufacturing that, by the late nineteenth century, included the Kenton Hardware Company's locks and toy cap guns and the International Car Company's railroad cabooses.
