Two railroads, one township

Jackson Township's growth tracked two rail lines. The Mad River and Lake Erie Railroad reached the area on the Fourth of July, 1846, and the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway followed in 1853-54, with its first train arriving that year. Surveyor J. Harvey Davis platted the town of Forest at the junction in March 1855, and by 1883 it had grown to roughly 1,200 residents with its own stores, mills, and professional offices -- a rail town built almost entirely within one generation of the tracks arriving.
