How Moorefield Township, Harrison County began

Moorefield Township, four miles by seven in the south of Harrison County, was named for the pioneer family of Moores and has had about its present bounds since the commissioners organized it on December 6, 1824. Thomas Rankin settled in 1805, and by 1813 about two dozen families were on the land. The village of Moorefield was platted on December 15, 1815 by Michael Moore and Gabriel Cane. The Cleveland, Tuscarawas Valley and Wheeling Railroad reached the southwestern corner in 1880 and made a new town, Piedmont, first called Butler. During the Civil War the township's men were remembered for volunteering in large numbers; a 1928 letter lists 123 soldiers. The township had 1,150 people in 1890 and 377 in 2020.

Settled 1805 (Thomas Rankin), incorporated December 6, 1824 (organized as a township), by Harrison County commissioners.

Where the name comes from

Lewis's 1921 county history says the township was named for the pioneer family of Moores in that vicinity; the village of Moorefield was platted by Michael Moore and Gabriel Cane.

Before the town

No Native village, mound, burial or battle site is recorded for Moorefield Township in the sources consulted (Hanna's 1900 county history, Lewis's 1921 county history, the township and village chapters). What the record does show is regional. The 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh, signed with the Wyandot, Delaware (Lenape), Ojibwe and Odawa, claimed most of eastern and southern Ohio for the United States, though many Native leaders rejected it, and the 1795 Treaty of Greenville confirmed the cession after Fallen Timbers. Hanna notes that the first routes into Harrison County were probably old Indian trails along streams and ridge tops, and cites Archer Butler Hulbert's 1900 study of Ohio's Indian thoroughfares, which traced a 'Mingo Trail' from the Mingo Bottoms (Steubenville) to Will's Town (Duncan Falls) crossing the county a short distance south of Cadiz. The first settlers to reach Short Creek in 1796 included former government Indian scouts paid in land, and Hanna describes the county's earliest white visitors as Indian fighters, scouts and hunters from the Ohio River frontier. Hulbert's Mingo Trail ran a short distance south of Cadiz, which may place it close to this township, but Hanna does not say which townships it crossed.

Nations recorded here: Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga), Delaware (Lenape), Shawnee.

Stories

The railroad town that was named Butler

Piedmont began in 1879, when George H. Collins put up the first building aside from Lewis Bethel's farmhouse and opened a general store. J. J. Sears, who came from Barnesville on April 29, 1880, was the first to stay overnight, and the Cleveland, Tuscarawas Valley and Wheeling Railroad arrived that year, its first passenger train in February. The new station was called Butler for Harvey Butler, who owned the land and gave the depot grounds and right of way. Freight kept going astray to Butler in Richland County, so the station and village became Piedmont; the part north of the Cadiz and Cambridge road and west of the railway is still platted as Collinsport for Zachariah Collins, who owned that land. By 1920 the village had a planing mill, a handle factory, a flour mill built in 1886, a bank and about 275 residents.

123 men from a crossroads

In March 1928 the Freeport Press printed a letter from Z. A. Moore, a longtime resident, listing 123 Civil War soldiers from Moorefield and the country around it. He recalled that it 'has been said' that more men went from the little town of Moorefield than from any place of the same size in the state, and added that only seven of the 123 were still living. The page that preserves the letter treats the boast as hearsay. Lewis's 1921 history adds that the Civil War 'took many brave young and middle-aged men' from the village, which had been platted in 1815, and that its leading merchant, Julius M. Schreiber, had lost heavily to Morgan's raiders.
