How Smithfield Township, Jefferson County began
Smithfield Township was set off from Short Creek Township on November 7, 1805, with its first election held at William Stewart's residence. Two squatters, Simpson and Tyson, left the area by 1800, but Quaker families migrating from North Carolina -- the Kinseys, Mason Miller, Richard Jelkes, Malachi Jolly and others -- settled the township around 1798 to 1800, followed by John Morton, Cadwallader Evans, Joseph McGrew and Jacob Ong between 1802 and 1806, and James Purviance with his six sons by 1810. The township grew three communities, Smithfield, York and Adams, along with mills, tanneries, a hat-making trade, pork packing and merchant tailoring; by 1878 its ten sub-districts enrolled 533 schoolchildren.

Where the name comes from
Named Smithfield, like the village at its center; the specific reasoning behind the name was not given in the sources consulted. The township holds three villages -- Smithfield, York and Adena -- of which Adena sits in its southwest corner and is described separately.
Before the town
No source reviewed records a specific Native American village, mound or documented encounter within Smithfield Township. The land was already open to settlement under the Treaty of Greenville (1795) when the earliest Quaker families arrived around 1798-1800, and the township was formally organized in 1805.

Stories
A Quaker township built by three waves of settlement
Smithfield Township's settlement came in three distinct waves rather than one steady influx. Two squatters, remembered only as Simpson and Tyson, tried the land first and left by 1800, leaving no lasting mark. The families who actually built the township were North Carolina Quakers -- the Kinseys, Mason Miller, Richard Jelkes, Malachi Jolly and others -- who arrived around 1798 to 1800 seeking, as Quaker migrants across the Ohio Valley often did, cheaper land and distance from a slaveholding South. A second wave, including John Morton, Cadwallader Evans, Joseph McGrew and Jacob Ong, filled in the township between 1802 and 1806, and James Purviance arrived with six sons in 1810, anchoring a family line that would remain prominent locally for generations. By 1878 the resulting community supported three villages, ten sub-districts of schoolchildren, and trades ranging from tanning and hat-making to pork packing.
Smithfield village: a surveyor's flattery and a founder's grand plan
James Carr laid out the village of Smithfield in 1803 after buying the east half of the northeast quarter of section 11 from an earlier entry by Horton J. Howard and Abel Townsend. As the 1880 county history tells it, a surveying party passing through from the Ohio River stopped at the site, and its chief remarked to Carr that it was 'the finest situation for an inland town' they had seen since leaving the river -- flattery enough that Carr laid out streets and lots 'in large profusion,' staking High Street as the main thoroughfare with two public squares facing each other. For its first years the settlement depended on goods carried on foot or packhorse from Wellsburg, West Virginia, and residents lived largely on cornbread grated from ears of corn on a homemade tin grater. Two additions followed, in 1805 and 1815, both by Carr.
