How Union County began
Union County was organized by the Ohio General Assembly on April 1, 1820, carved from parts of Franklin, Delaware, Madison and Logan counties after lobbying by Col. James Curry -- a formation the county's name commemorates directly, being made from the "union" of pieces of four existing counties. Its seat, Marysville, had already been laid out the year before, in 1819, by Zanesville lawyer Samuel W. Culbertson on land at the meeting of Mill Creek and the Delaware-to-Urbana road, and named for his daughter Mary Ellen. The land had been Shawnee, Wyandot and Mingo hunting and travelling ground -- crossed by Big Darby Creek, which the Wyandot are recorded to have called "Ollentangy" -- until the Treaty of Greenville of August 3, 1795 opened most of it to settlement (the treaty line crosses the county, and the land north of it stayed Native land until 1817), and its best-documented early Euro-American resident, Jonathan Alder, was himself a former Shawnee-Mingo captive who farmed and raised a family along the Big Darby in what became Jerome Township. Prehistoric Hopewell people built the three-mound Ellis Mounds group north of Marysville centuries before any of that, evidence that the county's low, once-forested till plain drew human settlement long before Ohio existed. Union County today remains a mix of farm townships and the growing city of Marysville, seat of a county whose fourteen townships were organized piecemeal between 1820 and 1849.
Marysville was platted in August 1819, a year before the county itself was organized, by Zanesville lawyer Samuel W. Culbertson on 450 acres he had purchased in 1817 at the junction of Mill Creek and the road connecting Delaware and Urbana; he had the original 96 lots surveyed by Charles Roberts and named the town for his daughter, Mary Ellen Culbertson (1810-1853), who later married U.S. Congressman Joshua Mathiot. Marysville became the seat of the new Union County upon its organization in 1820 (some sources give 1822 for its formal designation) and has remained the seat since. The county's first courthouse was built between 1835 and 1840; the present courthouse, dedicated January 27, 1883, is still in use.
