How Allen Township, Union County began
Allen Township, in the southwestern corner of Union County, was split off from Liberty Township and organized on June 5, 1827, taking its name from early settler Daniel Allen. No municipalities lie within it; the nearby village of North Lewisburg is across the line in Champaign County. The township remains rural, and its best-known landmark is 'The Fort,' an 1877 Italianate house on the Clark family farm that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Where the name comes from
The township was named for Daniel Allen, one of the area's first settlers and one of the first thirteen citizens to vote when the township organized; he served as one of its first trustees.
Before the town
No mound, village, treaty line, or named trail specific to Allen Township was found in the sources checked. The township lies within the much larger area of Union County ceded at the 1795 Treaty of Greenville, and Wyandot and Mingo people are documented camping and traveling along the Big Darby watershed a few townships to the east; nothing site-specific within Allen Township's own bounds was located. This is a gap in the available record, not an assertion that the township had no Native presence.

A house that outgrew its name
'The Fort' sounds like it should mark a stockade from the Indian wars, but the building on record northeast of North Lewisburg is an 1877 brick Italianate farmhouse, one of the most elaborate rural houses of its style anywhere in Union County. It was built on land the Clark family had farmed since Angus Clark settled there in the township's early years, and it became known regionally as the home of Shepard Clark, a horse breeder whose stock was well regarded across Ohio. The house earned its place on the National Register in 1982 for its architecture and its tie to Clark's breeding operation, not for any defensive history — a reminder that not every place name in the county points where it first seems to.
