How York Township, Union County began

York Township was set off from the northern part of Liberty Township on December 3, 1833, one of the later of Union County's fourteen townships to be organized. Its earliest surveys date to 1799, and its first settler, Joseph Miller, arrived in February 1828; George Coons bought 100 acres and built a cabin in 1829 at what became known as the Coons Settlement, north of the later village of York Center. A Free-Will Baptist congregation organized at Coons's house in 1839. The township has never held an incorporated village; York Center and Somersville remain its two small unincorporated crossroads communities.

Settled 1828 (Joseph Miller), platted 1841 (York Center), incorporated 1833-12-03, by George Coons (settlement).

Where the name comes from

No source found records why York Township took its name; it is one of ten townships named York across Ohio, likely echoing York, England or one of the many earlier American places of that name rather than any local circumstance.

Before the town

No mound, village or trail specific to York Township has turned up in the sources checked; the earliest surveys here date to 1799 but settlement did not begin until 1828, well after Native American land title in this part of Union County had passed to the United States. The county lay within territory used by the Wyandot, Shawnee, Miami and Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga); the Greenville Treaty Line of 1795 runs through Union County, and Jonathan Alder, taken captive as a boy by the Mingo and Shawnee, later settled in Jerome Township in the same county.

Nations recorded here: Wyandot, Shawnee, Miami, Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga).

Stories

A church born in a settler's cabin

York Township's first congregation did not wait for a building. George Coons had settled two miles north of the future York Center in 1829, buying 100 acres and putting up a cabin that gave the neighborhood its early name, the Coons Settlement. Ten years later, in 1839, a group of Free-Will Baptists organized their church at Coons's own house rather than in any meetinghouse, a common enough arrangement in a township still thin on public buildings. The township itself had only existed for six years by then, having been cut from the northern end of Liberty Township in 1833. York Center, the small crossroads that eventually became the township's civic hub, was not laid out until 1841, and its school, chartered in 1915 as the York Rural School District, ran until it consolidated with the Byhalia district in 1952 — the usual arc of a one-room-school township folding into larger county systems in the twentieth century.
