How Marysville began

Marysville was laid out in 1819 by Samuel W. Culbertson, a Zanesville lawyer who bought 450 acres at the crossing of Mill Creek and the Delaware-to-Urbana road and named the town for his daughter, Mary Ellen Culbertson. When Union County was organized from parts of Franklin, Delaware, Madison and Logan counties in 1820, Marysville was made the county seat in 1822. The village was incorporated by 1840, when Otway Curry was elected its mayor, grew as a market and rail town through the 1800s, and later became a city. It is now the seat of Union County and home to Honda's original U.S. auto plant.

Settled 1817 (Abraham Amrine, two miles north of the town site), platted 1819, incorporated by 1840, by Samuel W. Culbertson.

Where the name comes from

Culbertson named the new town for his daughter, Mary Ellen Culbertson (1810-1853), who later married U.S. Congressman Joshua Mathiot.

Before the town

No mound, village, or trail is documented at the Marysville town site itself in the sources checked. The land was within the area ceded by the Wyandot, Shawnee, Lenape, Miami, Ottawa and other nations at the 1795 Treaty of Greenville, which opened most of Ohio south and east of a line running near present Fort Recovery to American settlement; Union County lies inside that cession. Jonathan Alder, who had been captured by Shawnee raiders in Virginia in 1782 and adopted by a Mingo family, lived a few miles from Marysville in Jerome Township after 1796 and led the Union County militia company that built the county's only blockhouse, at Mill Creek about three miles north of Marysville, during the War of 1812 — a sign the area was still a contested frontier a generation after Greenville.

Timeline

  1. — Abraham Amrine makes the first permanent settlement in the area, about two miles north of the future townsite.
  2. — Samuel W. Culbertson lays out Marysville along Mill Creek at the Delaware-Urbana road, naming it for his daughter Mary.
  3. — Union County is organized by the Ohio legislature from parts of Franklin, Delaware, Madison and Logan counties.
  4. — Marysville is designated the Union County seat, replacing the temporary seat at Milford Center.
  5. — In February, Marysville poet Otway Curry writes the 'Log Cabin Song,' sung across the country in William Henry Harrison's presidential campaign; on May 4 he is elected mayor of the incorporated village, and is believed to have been its first.
  6. — The Marysville Upground Reservoir on Raymond Road is built and put into service, holding 1.39 billion gallons fed by an inflatable dam.
  7. — A new city water treatment plant at 18000 Raymond Road is commissioned, treating about 3.6 million gallons a day.

Stories

A daughter's name on the map

Samuel Culbertson was a Zanesville attorney, not a settler looking for a homestead, when he bought 450 acres where Mill Creek crossed the Delaware-to-Urbana road in 1817. Two years later he had the tract surveyed into 96 lots and platted a town there, and rather than name it for himself or for a feature of the land, as most Ohio founders did, he named it for his daughter Mary Ellen. She grew up to marry Joshua Mathiot, who represented Ohio in Congress in the 1840s. The town her father founded became, within three years, the seat of a brand-new county carved out of the corners of four older ones.

The song that helped elect a president

In 1840, Marysville poet and later state legislator Otway Curry wrote the 'Log Cabin Song' for William Henry Harrison's presidential campaign, part of the log-cabin-and-hard-cider imagery Harrison's supporters used to cast the wealthy general as a man of the frontier. The song was sung at Whig rallies across the country that year, and Harrison won the White House. Curry, who also served in the Ohio legislature, is remembered locally as the county's first literary figure of any note.
