How Morgan County began

Morgan County was formed on December 29, 1817, from parts of Muskingum, Washington and Guernsey counties, organized on March 1, 1819, and named for Daniel Morgan, the Revolutionary War general and Virginia congressman. Its ground on the middle Muskingum was Lenape (Delaware) and Wyandot hunting country crossed by Native trails, and the first American settlement here, the Ohio Company's blockhouse at Big Bottom, was destroyed by a Delaware and Wyandot war party on January 2, 1791, the opening blow of four years of war that ended with the 1795 Treaty of Greenville. Settlers from New England, Virginia and Pennsylvania followed after 1795, with Quaker communities in Penn and Marion townships; a bitter fight over whether McConnelsville or a site nearer the county's center should be the seat split local politics into 'Juntos' and 'Brimstones' for most of a decade. Salt wells along the Muskingum made Morgan the leading salt-producing county in Ohio by the 1840 census, until the state's lock-and-dam improvement of the river (contracted in 1836) closed navigation for years and ruined most of the salt makers, after which the river towns of McConnelsville, Malta and Stockport lived on boat traffic, mills and farming. The county's population peaked at 28,585 in 1850, before Noble County took its eastern townships, and stood at 13,802 at the 2020 census, a rural county of farms, reclaimed strip-mine land, Wayne National Forest tracts and Burr Oak Lake.

McConnelsville, laid out in 1817 by General Robert McConnel, was chosen in May 1818 by two of the three state commissioners (Ephraim Cutler and Samuel Lybrand; David Robb dissented in favor of a site on the Zanesville-Marietta road nearer the center), confirmed when pro-McConnelsville commissioners won the October 1819 election, and saved when a petition to relocate the seat was 'indefinitely postponed' in the state senate.
