How Deerfield Township, Morgan County began
Deerfield Township, in the northwestern corner of Morgan County, was surveyed while still part of Washington County and organized with its first recorded election on February 5, 1820. Settlers from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia and Maryland arrived between about 1816 and 1820, including a noted professional hunter, a Baptist preacher-shoemaker, and Quaker and Methodist community leaders. The township never grew a large village of its own — only the small platted community of Triadelphia (1838) is recorded — and remains an unincorporated farming township. Its best-known landmark is the 1867 Helmick Mill Covered Bridge over Island Run, built where Joseph Helmick once ran a flouring mill and sawmill on a flint-rock falls.
Settled 1816-1820, by Silas Saylor, Samuel Stanbery, Isaac Whitaker, Samuel Moody, William Massey, Hugh Nixon among the first settlers.
Where the name comes from
No source consulted records why the township was named Deerfield; the name is common across Ohio (it is shared by townships in Portage, Ross, Warren and other counties) and likely reflects the abundance of deer in the area at settlement, consistent with the recollection that early settler Silas Saylor made his living as a professional hunter who killed 618 deer.
Before the town
No Native American village, trail, mound or treaty site specific to Deerfield Township was found in the sources checked; the 1886 county history's account of the township's settlement makes no mention of Native people beyond noting the hunting economy of its earliest settlers. The township lies within the 1795 Treaty of Greenville cession and the Ohio Company's Muskingum-valley purchase; Wyandot, Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware) and Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga) people traveled and hunted the wider Muskingum valley before removal, but no site-specific record for this township was located.

Stories
A mill on the falls
By 1880 Joseph 'Joe' Helmick owned both a flouring mill and a sawmill at a falls on Island Run in Deerfield Township, where flint rock outcrops broke the stream in two — the flouring mill stood on the south side, the sawmill on the north. Thirteen years earlier, in 1867, Samuel Price had built a 72-foot multiple-kingpost covered bridge over the run for $872, close enough to the mills that it took the Helmick name. The bridge, rehabilitated in 1991 and still carrying about 40 vehicles a day, crosses a rock-bottomed stream with a small waterfall just downstream — a rare piece of the township's nineteenth-century industrial landscape still standing where it was built.
A hunter's frontier
Deerfield Township's earliest settlers arrived to a landscape still organized around hunting rather than farming. Silas Saylor, who came in October 1818, made a documented living as a professional hunter, credited in the 1886 county history with killing 618 deer over his career — a number that speaks to how thick the game still was in the Muskingum valley uplands three decades after the Big Bottom massacre had driven settlement north from Marietta. Saylor's neighbors were a more typical mix: Samuel Moody, a Baptist preacher who also worked as a shoemaker, and William Massey, a Quaker from Pennsylvania who became the township's first justice of the peace — the everyday trades that turned a hunting ground into a farming township within a generation.
