How Manchester Township, Morgan County began
Manchester Township was organized in 1822 as a 36-square-mile township before losing its eastern half to the creation of Noble County in 1851, leaving 18 sections. Charles Harwood, who settled in section 8 in 1806, was the first settler. The unincorporated village of Reinersville, laid out in 1848 by Samuel Reiner, became the township's main settlement, though the older Seeleyville, founded roughly twenty years earlier around John Seeley's store, came first. The 2020 census recorded 117 people across the township's 18.6 square miles in the northeastern corner of the county.
Settled 1806, platted 1848, incorporated 1822, by Charles Harwood, first settler (1806); township organized 1822; Reinersville laid out by Samuel Reiner in 1848.

Stories
Two villages, twenty years apart
Reinersville, laid out by Samuel Reiner in 1848, grew into the township's main settlement, reaching a population of about 150 by 1886 and hosting both a Masonic lodge (Clemente Amitie Lodge No. 285) and an Odd Fellows lodge (Wood Grove Lodge No. 288). But Reinersville was not the township's first store town: Seeleyville, an even smaller settlement built around John Seeley's store, predated it by roughly two decades. Seeleyville never grew past its founding purpose and faded from the map, while Reinersville persisted as an unincorporated community into the twenty-first century, still home to a Methodist church.
A township cut in half
When Manchester Township organized in 1822 it covered a full 36 square miles. That changed in 1851, when the Ohio legislature carved Noble County out of pieces of Morgan, Guernsey, Monroe and Washington counties, and Manchester Township's eastern half went with it. What had been one township became two: an eastern remnant absorbed into Noble County's township structure, and the western 18 sections that stayed Manchester Township, Morgan County -- the boundary that still holds today, leaving the township one of the smallest in the county at 18.6 square miles.
