How Huron County began
Huron County was created by the Ohio legislature on February 7, 1809, out of the Firelands, the 500,000-acre westernmost strip of the Connecticut Western Reserve that Connecticut set aside in 1792 to compensate residents whose towns British forces had burned during the Revolutionary War. The land could not be settled until the 1805 Treaty of Fort Industry cleared Wyandot, Ottawa, Chippewa, Munsee, Delaware, Shawnee and Potawatomi title to it, after which surveyor Almon Ruggles laid it into townships between 1806 and 1808. The county organized for government in 1815, with an early courthouse near Milan before the seat moved to the newly platted town of Norwalk in 1818. Erie County split off Huron County's northern half, including most of the Lake Erie shoreline, in 1838. Both the county and the Huron River take their name from the Huron (Wyandot) people, and many of the county's towns -- Norwalk, New London, Fairfield, Greenwich, Ridgefield, New Haven -- carry the names of the Connecticut towns the original land claims came from.
