How Fayette County began
Fayette County was formed by the Ohio General Assembly on March 1, 1810, from parts of Ross and Highland counties, one of five counties (with Madison, Pickaway, Guernsey and Clinton) organized that same year, and named for the Marquis de Lafayette, the French general who served under Washington in the American Revolution. Its seat, Washington Court House, was first settled by Virginia veterans of the Revolution who received the land as payment for their service; Edward Smith Sr., a Pennsylvania emigrant who built near Paint Creek in 1810, appears to have been among the first, and drowned crossing a flooded creek soon after coming home from the War of 1812. The county's flat, once-prairie ground along Paint Creek and Deer Creek lay at the western edge of the Pickaway Plains and Scioto valley country that had been the heart of Shawnee settlement in Ohio through the eighteenth century, opened to Euro-American settlement by the Treaty of Greenville of 1795. Fayette County today is known for its courthouse's Willard murals and for the deadly 1894 militia shooting on its public square, one of the starkest episodes in Ohio's history of mob violence and state response to it.
Washington Court House's first settlers appear to have included Edward Smith Sr. and his family, who came from Pennsylvania in 1810 and built near Paint Creek; Smith left for military service during the War of 1812 and drowned crossing a flooded creek soon after returning, but his widow and ten children remained, and the town grew, reaching a printing office, seven stores, two taverns, two groceries, a schoolhouse, a meeting house and about seventy houses by 1833. The place was named Washington for the first president, with "Court House" added -- a naming convention Virginia-descended settlers carried west, where "Court House" traditionally marked a county seat -- to distinguish it from other Ohio places named Washington. The present Fayette County Courthouse, a Second Empire-style building at 110 East Court Street designed by architect David W. Gibbs and built 1882-85, opened May 1, 1885 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 2, 1973; its interior murals were painted by Ohio artist Archibald Willard, best known for "The Spirit of '76," who hid his own name inside the address on an envelope depicted in the mural "The Spirit of the U.S. Mail."
