How Milledgeville began

Milledgeville is a small village in the north of Jasper Township, Fayette County, laid out by James Hogue in 1855 around a newly built mill. Wikipedia gives its name as a compound of 'mill on the edge of ville.' It reached a peak population of 222 in 1960 and has since declined to under 100 residents.

Platted 1855, by James Hogue.

Where the name comes from

The name is an amalgamation of 'mill on the edge of ville,' reflecting the mill built on the town site in 1855.

Timeline

  1. — A post office named South Plymouth is established on August 26 with E. L. Ford as postmaster; it is renamed Milledgeville after the village grows, with Smith Rankin appointed postmaster on February 9, 1877 (the 1881 history says the office moved to Milledgeville in 1878).
  2. — James Hogue lays out the village a mile north of Plymouth at the crossing of the Palmer pike; its first building is the Milledgeville Mills, built by Straley, Creamer and Company, which pass through several owners to Jaral and Grove in 1870.
  3. — Jacob Creamer builds the first store room; he does business about two years and no more goods are sold in the village until 1878.
  4. — Dr. Cully becomes the village's first physician, staying about three years; Dr. Gaskin opens an office in 1865.
  5. — W. E. King opens the first blacksmith shop; Frank Smith, from Virginia, builds a dwelling and shoe shop in 1867.
  6. — G. L. McAllister builds the first brick store room, and C. M. Bush opens the first hotel; the two-story brick Lamb and Murphy block follows in 1880.
  7. — A Methodist church is built at Milledgeville, valued at $2,500; the village has about two hundred people, a mill, two groceries, a hotel, two physicians and a large general store.
  8. — The Milledgeville Bank is organized with C. E. Ford president and W. E. Smith cashier, twenty stockholders and $4,125 capital, later $20,000; a fire in the town on April 13, 1912 damages it, but it resumes business immediately.
  9. — The census counts 187 people; the village has a bank, clothing and shoe stores, restaurants, hardware, grain and lumber dealers and two physicians, with Methodist Protestant and Baptist churches.
  10. — The village reached its recorded peak population of 222.
  11. — The census recorded 98 residents, down from 112 in 2010.

Stories

A name that describes itself

Wikipedia gives the name Milledgeville as a run-together description of what stood there: a mill on the edge of a ville, laid out in 1855 the same year the mill went up, rather than a name taken from a founder or a hometown back east. The village reached its high point of 222 residents in 1960 and has been shrinking since, standing at 98 in the 2020 census.

A town that began with a mill

Milledgeville's first building was the Milledgeville Mills, put up in 1855 by Straley, Creamer and Company, the year James Hogue laid out the village a mile north of Plymouth on the Palmer pike. The mill passed through several owners by 1870, while the first store, Jacob Creamer's of 1856, lasted two years and left the town without a merchant until 1878. Growth came with the Dayton and Southeastern Railroad and then the Columbus and Maysville line: a brick store in 1879, the Lamb and Murphy block in 1880, a hotel run in turn by Bush, Rush and Dr. Spangler. The post office moved there from South Plymouth, which E. L. Ford had opened in 1852, and in 1903 the Milledgeville Bank opened with twenty stockholders.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
