How Union Township, Fayette County began

Union Township is the geographic center of Fayette County and the only one of the county's ten townships that does not touch a county line. It holds Washington Court House, the county seat, and a slice of the older village of Bloomingburg in its northeastern corner. Bloomingburg, platted in 1815 near the cabin where the first county court sat before the seat moved to Washington Court House in 1812, was a documented Underground Railroad stop in the 19th century. Away from the two towns, the township's early economy in the 1830s ran on gristmills, sawmills, a fulling mill and a carding machine processing local grain and wool.

Where the name comes from

Union Township carries one of the most common township names in Ohio; the state has 27 townships named Union, and no source found gives a specific naming story for this one beyond the generic use of the name.

Before the town

No village, camp, mound, or treaty line specific to Union Township is documented in the sources checked. The township surrounds Washington Court House, for which the same absence of a site-specific Native record applies (see that unit's file). At the county scale, the historic Wyandot, Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware), Miami and Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga) peoples traveled and hunted across this part of south-central Ohio, and an 1914 survey counted 42 Native mounds in Fayette County, of which only one (Jackson Mound, well to the south near Pancoastburg, outside this township) still stands. Ohio land title in this area rests chiefly on the Treaty of Greenville (1795).

Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Wyandot, Lenape (Delaware), Miami, Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga), Adena culture.

Stories

The county seat that didn't last

When Fayette County was organized in 1810, its courts did not sit in a purpose-built courthouse but in the home of a private citizen, John Devault, a little north of the present site of Bloomingburg. That arrangement lasted only two years: in 1812 the county seat was moved south to the newer town of Washington Court House, which has held it ever since. Bloomingburg went on with its own life as a farm-market village, platted in 1815 and known in local tradition as a stop on the Underground Railroad, its name said to come from the abundance of flower gardens its women kept along the streets.
