How Washington Court House began
Washington Court House was first settled by Virginia veterans of the Revolution who received the land as payment for their service; Edward Smith Sr. and his family, Pennsylvania settlers who reached the Paint Creek area in 1810, appear to have been among the first. The town took the county seat from Bloomingburg in 1812 and kept the Virginia custom of appending 'Court House' to a place named for George Washington, though the compound name was not made the city's formal charter name until 2004. It grew through the 1800s as a market and courthouse town, was the site of a nationally noted 1873-74 women's temperance crusade and a 1894 near-lynching that Ohio's governor put down with militia gunfire, and today is Fayette County's only city and its seat of government.

Where the name comes from
The town was named for George Washington; 'Court House' was added in the Virginia manner of settlers who had come from a state where county seats were commonly called '[County] Court House.' The compound form 'Washington Court House' was not adopted as the city's own legal charter name until a new charter took effect January 1, 2004 — before that the city was legally just 'Washington,' with 'Court House' used to distinguish it from other Ohio towns named Washington.
Before the town
No village, camp, or named site of a historic Native nation is recorded within the city itself in the sources reviewed. The city sits inside a county where the historic Wyandot, Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware), Miami and Seneca-Cayuga (Mingo) peoples hunted and traveled, and where the Adena mound-building culture left at least 42 mounds by an 1914 survey count (only one, Jackson Mound, still stands, well south of the city near Pancoastburg). No treaty line, battle, or named Shawnee or Wyandot town is documented as having stood on the ground the city now occupies; the land passed to the United States chiefly under the Treaty of Greenville (1795), which is the general basis for Ohio land titles in this part of the state.

Stories
The Crusade That Began at Christmas
Beginning at Christmas 1873, Matilda Gilruth Carpenter led a band of Washington Court House women into the town's saloons to pray aloud and ask proprietors to sign pledges giving up the liquor trade. The action was one wave of the Woman's Crusade that spread through southern Ohio that winter, less than a year before the founding of the national Woman's Christian Temperance Union in November 1874. Carpenter later wrote the fullest account of it herself, 'The Crusade: Its Origin and Development at Washington Court House and Its Results' (1893), and lived to see national Prohibition take effect in 1920 at age 88. A scene inside one of the targeted saloons, Beck's, was published as an illustration in Eliza Daniel Stewart's 1889 crusade memoir and survives today as one of the few images connected to the event.
Five dead at the courthouse door
In October 1894 a crowd gathered outside the Fayette County jail intending to lynch William 'Jasper' Dolby, a Black man who had just been convicted of assault. Sheriff's forces could not hold the mob back, and Governor William McKinley ordered the Ohio militia to the scene. When the crowd pressed toward the jail on the night of October 16-17, Colonel Alonzo B. Coit ordered his men to fire through the courthouse doors; five members of the mob were killed. McKinley's later comment — that the law had been upheld, 'but in this case at fearful cost' — is still quoted in accounts of the episode, and the bullet marks are said to remain visible on the courthouse woodwork.
A cemetery built like a park
Washington Cemetery began in 1856 as a 10-acre burial ground platted by Judge Daniel McLain and other leading citizens, with Colonel Samuel N. Yeoman — a veteran of both the California Gold Rush and the Civil War — serving as its first president. Over the following decades it grew to roughly 23.5 acres laid out with curving drives, artificial lakes, and imported shrubs and trees in the 'garden cemetery' style then fashionable in larger cities, unusual for a county seat of Washington Court House's size. A fountain was added in 1892 and the Late Gothic Revival Judy Chapel in 1905. By the late twentieth century the grounds had fallen into disrepair; local garden clubs restored the chapel in 1997 and the fountain soon after, and in 2006 the whole cemetery was added to the National Register as a historic district, a designation cemeteries rarely receive.
