How Cross Creek Township, Jefferson County began

Cross Creek Township, set off from Steubenville Township and organized in the early nineteenth century, takes its name from Cross Creek, which crosses it toward the Ohio River. Irish Revolutionary War veteran William McElroy, who cut his way through the woods from Steubenville to settle on section twenty-four, was among the first arrivals, and John Foster brought his wife and eight children from Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1808. The township grew mills, distilleries, coal mines and at least one large vineyard through the nineteenth century, and today holds parts of two incorporated places, Wintersville and New Alexandria. A township tradition preserved in the 1880 county history holds that one early settler, a Mr. Elroy (McElroy), refused Daniel Greathouse's invitation to join the 1774 raiding party that murdered the family of the Mingo leader Logan at Yellow Creek -- a rare township-level trace of the event that reshaped the whole Ohio Valley's relations with Native nations a generation before the township itself was organized.

Settled 1797-1800 (Moses Hunter and others); William McElroy among the first, platted not applicable (township), incorporated 1806-06-04, by Jefferson County commissioners, separating it from Steubenville Township; surveyed into sections by Alexander Holmes in 1801 and quarter sections by Benjamin Hough in 1802.

Where the name comes from

Named for Cross Creek, the stream that crosses the township toward the Ohio River.

Before the town

No mound, earthwork or named Native village is recorded within Cross Creek Township, but the township's own 1880 county history preserves a direct, named link to the single most consequential Native-related event in the county's early record: it recounts that David (Daniel) Greathouse tried to recruit an early township settler, a Mr. Elroy (William McElroy), to join the party that carried out the April 1774 killing of the Mingo leader Logan's family at Yellow Creek, and that Elroy refused. That massacre, which took place at the mouth of Yellow Creek in what is now Saline Township at the opposite end of the county, triggered Lord Dunmore's War and produced Logan's Lament, one of the best-known pieces of Native American oratory recorded in early Ohio history. The land itself passed out of Native control under the Treaty of Fort McIntosh (1785) and Treaty of Greenville (1795) before the township's settlers arrived.

Nations recorded here: Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga), Wyandot, Shawnee.

Timeline

  1. — Dr. Joseph Doddridge agrees to hold Book of Common Prayer services every third Saturday at the house of Mary McGuire, about four miles west of Steubenville; the services grow into St. James parish by 1814.
  2. — Alexander Holmes surveys the township into sections (and Benjamin Hough into quarter sections in 1802).
  3. — The first authentic school in the township is standing near the later No. 4 schoolhouse, taught by an Irishman named Green; subscription schools follow in 1806-09 and the ox gad is used freely on pupils.
  4. — Cross Creek Township is separated from Steubenville Township on June 4, the sixth township of the second range with thirty-six sections; the first election is held at John McCullough's house.
  5. — John Foster arrives in the township with his wife and eight children from Washington County, Pennsylvania.
  6. — A cotton factory is built on Cross Creek about half a mile above the mouth of McIntire Creek; later changed to a woolen factory by John and James Elliott and run by George Marshall, it is the most extensive mill of its kind in the county outside Steubenville.
  7. — Matthew Thompson keeps a temperance hotel on the site of New Alexandria, giving it the early name Tempo; Alexander Smith lays out the town in 1831.
  8. — A frame church is built on the farm of Andrew Elliott for St. James congregation under Rev. Intrepid Morse, probably in the fall of 1820; the one-acre site is deeded to trustees on July 7, 1821 for $15, the parish is incorporated as St. James' Church, Cross Creek on May 10, 1825, and Bishop Chase consecrates the church the same year.
  9. — John Winters lays out Wintersville about five miles west of Steubenville; he builds a hotel and opens the first store, and the 'Forks' hotel to the west marks the end of the old plank road from Steubenville.
  10. — Confederate General John Hunt Morgan's raiders pass through the Wintersville area during Morgan's Raid.
  11. — Thomas Holmes, who opened a store and post office and built a saw and grist mill (Holmes' Mill) on the Steubenville & Indiana Railroad about ten miles west of Steubenville, is succeeded as postmaster by A. McManus; rural delivery later closed these offices, leaving only Fernwood, Reed's Mills and New Alexandria in 1910.
  12. — The county history records six active churches in the township -- St. James Episcopal, Cross Creek Presbyterian, Ekey M.E., Long's M.E., and Methodist and Disciples churches at Wintersville -- along with Elliott's Woolen Factory, several distilleries, coal mining, and Andrew Hutterly's fifty-acre vineyard producing native wines.
  13. — New county infirmary buildings, costing over $100,000, are completed on the site where William Gibson was born; the grounds command views of three states.

Stories

The man who refused to ride with Greathouse

Among the details the 1880 county history preserves about early Cross Creek Township settler William McElroy -- an Irish immigrant and Revolutionary War veteran who cut his own path through the woods from Steubenville to his land on section twenty-four and reportedly lived to be one hundred years old -- is a single sentence about an event that happened before he ever settled the township: Daniel Greathouse tried to persuade him to join the party that, in April 1774, murdered the family of the Mingo leader Logan at Yellow Creek, and McElroy refused. That killing, carried out by Virginia settlers at the mouth of Yellow Creek in what is now Saline Township, triggered Lord Dunmore's War and produced Logan's Lament, among the most widely reprinted pieces of Native American oratory from the era. A century later, the Cross Creek Township history-writer thought McElroy's refusal worth recording alongside his farm's acreage and his age at death -- a small, township-level echo of a much larger regional reckoning.

Services at Widow McGuire's

The first record of religious services in Cross Creek Township is an agreement dated December 1, 1800 in which Dr. Joseph Doddridge, who held monthly Episcopal services at Steubenville, promised to conduct them every third Saturday at the house of Mary McGuire, about four miles west of the town. By 1814 the gatherings had grown into the parish of St. James, which built its first frame church on Andrew Elliott's farm under Rev. Intrepid Morse; on December 1, 1816 members including William McConnell, Robert Maxwell, John Cunningham, George Mahan and Daniel Dunlevy signed a petition asking the general convention to let them form a diocese in the western country. When the diocese of Ohio was organized in 1818, St. James reported fifty-two communicants and more than one hundred baptisms in two years. Morse, a temperance man in a country with a still on nearly every farm, shared his goods with the poor and made enemies as well as friends. Mary McGuire's farm later became the birthplace of the orator William Gibson and then the county infirmary.
