How Wells Township, Jefferson County began

Wells Township was organized in 1823 out of Warren Township and named for Bezaliel Wells, the large landowner and Steubenville proprietor who co-founded the county seat. Settlement here came at a real cost: Henry Nations and Daniel Schammerhorn, who built a cabin at Block House Run near what became La Grange in September 1792, were killed by Native warriors near the same block house in the spring of 1793, and the Riley family suffered a similar attack while making sugar nearby -- permanent settlement did not really take hold until after the Treaty of Greenville ended the Northwest Indian War in 1795. Phillip Doddridge founded the village of La Grange (later Phillipsburg) in 1819, and the township developed around grist mills, coal mining and a livestock route to eastern markets through the nineteenth century.

Settled 1792 (first, unsuccessful attempt); 1798 onward (permanent settlement after 1795 treaty), platted 1819 (La Grange), incorporated 1823 (organized from Warren Township), by Jefferson County Commissioners.

Where the name comes from

Named for Bezaliel Wells, a large early landowner and the proprietor of Steubenville, who co-platted the county seat with James Ross in 1797.

Before the town

Wells Township's 1880 county history records a direct and costly encounter: in September 1792, Henry Nations and Daniel Schammerhorn built a cabin at Block House Run near the later site of La Grange, and were 'waylaid and killed by the Indians' near the same block house in the spring of 1793; the Riley family suffered a comparable attack while making maple sugar in the same area at roughly the same time. These killings came during the closing years of the Northwest Indian War, fought between the United States and a confederacy including the Shawnee, Miami, Lenape (Delaware) and Wyandot; the source states plainly that permanent settlement of the township only began after 'the treaty of General Wayne in 1795' (the Treaty of Greenville) ended that war and confirmed American control of the region. No named Native village, mound or earthwork within the township is recorded in the sources consulted.

Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Miami, Lenape (Delaware), Wyandot.

Timeline

  1. — Henry Nations and Daniel Schammerhorn build a cabin at Block House Run, near the later site of La Grange, in September.
  2. — Nations and Schammerhorn are killed near the block house in the spring; the Riley family suffers a similar attack nearby.
  3. — The Treaty of Greenville ends the Northwest Indian War; permanent settlement of the township follows.
  4. — Ebenezer Spriggs settles in the township, part of the first wave of permanent settlers including Thomas Taylor, Henry Oliver and the Tarr, Johnson, Armstrong, Roberts, Carson, Daugherty, Milholland, Dawson and Graham families.
  5. — John Jackson erects the township's first water-powered grist mill, on McIntire Run.
  6. — Phillip Doddridge founds the village on land bought from James Ross of Pittsburgh, naming it Phillipsburg for himself and building its first house as a hotel; James H. Moore buys the hotel in 1820 and becomes postmaster in 1822, the same year Harden Wheeler and Joseph Rose open the first store.
  7. — Wells Township is organized, separated from Warren Township; its first election is held April 7 at the house of widow McAdams, electing David Humphrey, Archibald Armstrong and Richard Spurrier as trustees.
  8. — Means, Collier and Wilson lay out a new addition to Phillipsburg and name it La Grange; the two names later merge under La Grange.

Stories

The block house that could not protect everyone

The place name Block House Run records a fortification whose purpose failed at least twice. Henry Nations and Daniel Schammerhorn built their cabin near the block house in September 1792, hoping its presence meant safety on the contested frontier; by the following spring both men were dead, killed by Native warriors near the same structure. The Riley family, caught making maple sugar in the same neighborhood, suffered a comparable attack. These were not isolated frontier tragedies but part of the last phase of the Northwest Indian War, fought between the United States and a confederacy of Ohio Country nations resisting American settlement; only after General Anthony Wayne's victory and the resulting 1795 Treaty of Greenville did the killing stop long enough for the township's permanent settlers -- Thomas Taylor, Ebenezer Spriggs and the rest -- to take up land here without expecting the same fate.

The teetotaler who caved to his own tavern

The 1880 county history credits Wells Township's first hotel to either Matthew Thompson or Nathaniel Dawson, and treats the two men as opposites: Dawson ran an ordinary whisky stand alongside his tavern, the expected arrangement of the day, while Thompson tried something unusual, opening a temperance house he called 'Tempo' -- the same name, and very likely the same man, who later kept the temperance hotel that gave neighboring New Alexandria its own earlier name of Tempo, since that village sits on the Wells-Cross Creek township line. The county historian recounts, with a certain dry amusement, that a tavern without a bar 'would have but little patronage' in those days, and that Thompson eventually had to choose between abandoning tavern-keeping altogether or adding a bar -- which he did, 'after which everything sailed smoothly, except, perhaps, the landlord's conscience.' Even after adding liquor, the house kept the name Tempo, a small monument to an experiment in temperance that the frontier drover trade would not support.
