How Bloomingdale began

Bloomingdale, in Wayne Township, was first laid out under the name Bloomfield in 1816 (the 1880 county history dates the same event to 1817 and credits David Craig); a post office called Bloomingdale has operated since 1822 (the 1910 county history says it was established in 1823), and the village is now called Bloomingdale. A steam flouring mill was moved to the village between 1856 and 1860, and by 1879 the county history counted about two hundred residents, two doctors and three churches there. Bloomingdale's population peaked at 339 in 1940 and was 145 at the 2020 census. The village is also home to Holy Family Hermitage, a Camaldolese monastic community of the Congregation of Monte Corona.

Settled 1816, platted 1816-03-20, incorporated 1848, by David Craig.

Stories

A tavern town on the Cadiz road

Bloomfield, the village's first name, was laid out by David Craig on March 20, 1816, as sixty-nine small lots, and it never added another. Its living came from its position about midway between Steubenville and Cadiz, which made it a natural stop for teams and travellers. Richard Price opened the first tavern in 1822 and Marion Duvall the second, and the village's first tradesmen followed in quick order: John Morrison the blacksmith in 1823, John Crow the wagonmaker at about the same time, Thomas Latta the tanner in 1826 and Henry Beckett a second tanner in 1827. A Presbyterian congregation had a frame church by 1827, Methodists a brick one by 1842. The village was incorporated in 1848; it had 184 inhabitants in 1850 and 175 in 1880, and the 1910 county history says its growth 'has not been marked.'

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Bloomingdale, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

51,266 days of records, 1878-02-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
