How Vinton County began

Vinton County, Ohio's least populous county, was formed March 23, 1850 from pieces of Athens, Gallia, Hocking, Jackson and Ross counties, at a time when the area still supported at least four charcoal iron furnaces. It is named for Samuel Finley Vinton, a Gallipolis lawyer who represented southern Ohio in Congress from 1823 to 1837 and 1843 to 1851. McArthur, platted in 1815 as McArthurstown and named for War of 1812 general and future Ohio governor Duncan McArthur, is the county seat. The county's hill country of sandstone ridges and narrow creek valleys shaped an economy of iron, timber and coal that rose and emptied out fast, leaving ghost towns like Moonville and state-forest land (Zaleski State Forest, 28,000 acres) covering much of the county today.

The Moonville Tunnel ghost

The story goes that a railroad brakeman died near Moonville in the 1800s, and that on dark nights his lantern still swings in the old tunnel. A Chillicothe newspaper reported a lantern-carrying ghost on the line in 1895.
